Why does DS's mouth smell like something's died in it?

His teeth are brushed at least twice a day - and ive had a good look at them for debris, but nothing - but since yesterday, good lord. The smell is bad enough to make me recoil, and I'm his mum so supposed to love everything about him. But this is something else. It's like there's something in his spit as well because he licked my face (he is 3) and now my face smells awful as well.

Short of eating poo, which I'm sure he hasn't done, what on earth could be causing this horrible smell? And how do we stop it?

If you're absolutely sure that there's no food debris trapped in his mouth, he's not stuck something up his nose has he??

queenebay · 01/04/2012 15:31

tonsillitis can smell horrific

deleting · 01/04/2012 15:32

Has he got a sore throat? Maybe he's coming down with something?

Calamityboo · 01/04/2012 15:33

My ds gets the most foul breath when he is poorly, like he has licked his nappy! Is your ds coming down with something?

GinPalace · 01/04/2012 15:34

I once Blush had a small piece of beef stuck between my teeth which I couldn't see. I was wondering why my breath was getting worse and worse. I was brushing constantly. In the end I flossed between all my teeth (long time ago, wasn't regular flosser then) and at the hard to reach ones right at the back I found the culprit. Bad breath gone instantly.
Not sure if that is useful but it's the only clue I have unless he is really badly dehydrated.

You are the first person I have told my 'rotten meat in my mouth' story to. I hope you consider it an honour. Grin

Gin - I had a similar, shameful experience and since then have been an obsessive flosser :o.

But I think the halitosis smell of decomposing food between the teeth is different to the smell of death/poo that opener is describing - is your DS constipated?

openerofjars · 01/04/2012 15:39

It was last week, wasn't it? Grin

Thanks, everyone, will have a go with a foot jack from the car boot (mostly a joke) and some dental floss.

He isn't at all unwell, so goodness knows if his teeth are clear. We were going to go on holiday at some point soon, so will get him to the doc's to check the nose option tomorrow. He also broke out in festive Easter nits this weekend as well.

DD's breath smells foul if she is suffering from catarrh after a cold. Infected catarrh is one of the worst smells I have ever encountered IMO.

Calamityboo · 01/04/2012 15:43

Ooh bun I wonder if that is what my ds gets, it is awful! Does it have any other symptoms?

GinPalace · 01/04/2012 15:47

Hassled phew - Thank goodness it's not just me. :)

angelene · 01/04/2012 15:51

My DD used to get bad breath if she was cutting a tooth, especially the big molars. She also gets it if she has a cold. I'm hoping she'll grow out of it.

Catsdontcare · 01/04/2012 15:56

Ds gets this and it's apparently related to his glue ear and adenoids. Hoping when he has grommets and adenoids out that it will solve the issue

Lovefruitsandvegs · 01/04/2012 23:46

omega three can give a bad smell too. problem with tonsils yes but also digestive problems.

lovebeinganana · 01/04/2012 23:50

both my dd suffered like this when they had tonsillitus.

cheesesarnie · 01/04/2012 23:55

sign of a bad throat with all my dc.

openerofjars · 02/04/2012 18:00

We think oral thrush, having had a good look at his tongue, so have unappealing gel ointment to shove onto his tongue tonight.

Wish me luck.

When DS2 had the virus from hell in February his breath could have peeled wallpaper. It was horrific. Sad

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 04/04/2012 00:10

My DS has weird, almost mothball smelling breath when he is dehydrated.
I can tell when he hasn't had enough water at school.

He doesn't like really minty toothpaste either. So I buy him Sensodyne Pro-namel and Retardex Mouthwash.
Does the trick for him (but expensive so I stock up on 3 for 2 offers in Boots)

Tranquilidade · 04/04/2012 00:12

DS used to get vile snot and it stunk! Catarrh can smell dreadful
