Hi All,

I'm a bit anxious as my baby (4 months - just) has suddenly become much more sleepy over the past couple of days. The last two nights she's slept right through the night (a first), and tonight she fell asleep after her bath without taking a feed. She's exclusively b/fed and has only had three feeds today.

I'm thinking that she's perhaps just worn out after an active couple of days but a little worried that she was so zonked that she wouldn't take her post-bath feed. Any thoughts?

How is she when shes awake? If shes with it thats a good sign.

Has she had wet nappies? If shes still getting wet nappies shes obv not dehydrated - keep eye on this though - they can become dehydrated v quickly. When was her last feed?

Does she have a temp?

Is her breathing ok?

Is she sucking in under her ribs? If yes call NHS now

Is she running a temperature? How has she been the rest of the day when awake - quieter than usual? How well did she feed when she was feeding?

If she has fed ok otherwise, been alert, not running a temp etc then she is probably just tired/on a growth spurt etc.
If she has a high temperature and no other clinical signs of a cold etc you should call the out of hours doctors and get her seen asap at this age as there is a very small chance of meningitis.
If however she has a temperature and maybe other signs like a runny nose too, she is probably just suffering from a cold and it will run it's course. If you are in any way unsure give the out of hours GP a call and talk it through, trust your parenting instinct.

Phone OOH. Get baby seen.

hmm i would get her seen too I'm afraid.
3 feeds in a day is really very little and i'd be worried about dehydration if nothing else.
but def get her checked over

5madthings · 25/03/2012 21:26

will she not feed in her sleep, is it worth trying to wake her just enough to get her to feed? i agree three feeds in a day is not enough for a 4mth old, she could just be coming down with a bug and will be up loads in the night wanting to feed, but i would be trying to feed her, even if it means waking her tbh.

Depends on the feeds. Dd1 at 4 months would only feed 3-4 times in a day, but one was 1-2 hours in the afternoon, and another took about an hour before she went down for 12 hours at night.

If she's active and alert when awake and producing lots of wet nappies, and has no signs of being ill (eg temperature) then I'd think she's okay.

Dd1 also suddenly slept through the night, haing always woken at 2-3 before, but once she'd done it she did it every night.

The GP won't mind though if you want her checked out, and if you feel there's something wrong then trust your instincts.
