Hand Foot and Mouth - can you get the rash elsewhere

DS2 is 16 mths - we thought he was teething - bit grumpy/not sleeping very well, masses of dribble. Over the last few days he's developed a spotty rash round his mouth (DH says he can see a few spots on the inside and there are some on his lips). He hasn't got a temp but is miserable. The rash looks like HF+M but he has a slight rash on his legs and one spot near the back of his knee. There are a few pale spots on one hand and near one sole of his foot - do you experts with HF+M think this is what it is or is it likely to be chicken pox. Obviously if it gets worse he'll be off to the docs tomorrow but it would be good to get an idea of what we are dealing with. I should add that he has had one illness after the other for the last 4/5 weeks starting with a vomiting bug then a cold and finally two weeks ago a really bad D+V bug that took a week to get over. Thanks for any advice.

Yeah, HF&M can be anywhere, usually around glands (eg DS still has lumps on his neck, tongue, armpits, and groin about six weeks after the other symptoms went away). Bumps look v similar to chicken pox, but I don't think doctors can do anything about either, beyond recommend Calpol etc to bring down temperature.

Good luck

Can def get it elsewhere. When Dd1 had it, the rash on her legs and bum was far worse than rest of her body, except for in her mouth which was horrid. So it may well be HF and M, although prob worth trip to doc to be sure.

Friend's son had it and the rash was especially prominent on the back of his legs. Very sore indeed and he was under the weather for quite a while, poor little chap.

Hope he feels better soon

Mine had spots on his groin when he had H,F and M. Have you considered the mild viral infection called the Sixth Disease?

Thanks all - def starting conclude HF+M - just had another look and there is rash on back of one hand and a few spots on his left palm. I just thought it was teething rash on his face but started to get suspicious when I saw blister type spots on his lips - never seen this with teething in either of my DS's.

Obviously looks like no nursery on Monday - I know its selfish but getting a bit fed up with it all - I only work 2 days and haven't done a 'full' week for a month with all the illness - DH has shared the load but his work are getting a bit iffy about all his leave to look after poorly DS2 - we haven't got family nearby.
