Tell me why DD is complaining of pain 'down there' before my imagination runs riot

DD (2.3) has always been funny about her fanny, she hates us to touch it or wash it, which makes me a bit paranoid sometimes. And of course it means it's hard to keep it clean. The last couple of days she has complained of intermittent pain, but gets upset about the smallest cut or pain so it's hard to tell if it really does hurt or if she's being dramatic.

She does not have a temperature and is otherwise on good form.

Please tell me she could have a UTI or cystitis before my pregnant, paranoid imagination runs wild.

Can she tell you when it hurts? as in is it when she wees or just always? Have you noticed her weeing more and does it smell different? If you think it's a UTI you should prob see the GP in case she needs antibiotics. I guess it could also be thrush or nappy rash (if she is still in nappies) - if its itchy she could have scratched and now it hurts?

cybbo · 08/03/2012 20:39

My d used to get terrible stabbing pains in her nethers as she was growing up. Almost like growing pains. Never had pain on weeing and wasnt red, just had pain inside. She grew out of it soon enough

Kenobi · 08/03/2012 20:42

Ohhhhh, thrush - I didn't think of that. She doesn't complain about pain while peeing but she smelled quite strongly yesterday, and has been peeing more.

It's doc time, isn't it?

No discharge however.

Do you have any reason for riotous imaginings?

MrsTittleMouse · 08/03/2012 20:46

I was going to say thrush. My two are prone to it (as am I) and because the infection tends to stay external it doesn't seem to have as much discharge as adult thrush, it's just sore and red. And yes, it does smell different.

I agree that it's worth getting it checked out. Because I know that mine are prone, I just have a tube of Canesten around for any outbreaks, but it's better to have it confirmed for the first case.

Kenobi · 08/03/2012 21:03

Thanks tittlemouse, funnily enough DD had oral thrush as a baby, I've had it more than once and DH is prone to it so it's obviously something that's in our family. So silly of me not to think of it.

Can I use adult canesten? Don't worry, will take her to a doc but just wondering.

seeker Logically not. She spends time with me, DH, both sets of grandparents in short bursts, and a nanny. We both come from happy, ordinary families with no history of abuse. It's just, I've never understood why she's so funny about her bits, but bearing in mind how sensitive she is I could have washed her too hard when she was a baby and she's never trusted me since Blush

Also I am very, very pregnant and if my DH is away overnight I have to check all the doors in case of monsters so I'm not the most trustworthy witness at the moment.

She's just had chicken pox, could that have thrown her system out of whack?

cybbo you just reminded me I had those when growing up - how weird. And also grew out of them.

Could she have had a chicken pox spot in a very delicate area? My DD's bottom was covered in them, and they were the last to heal, turning almost to ulcers before finally healing, prob due to it being a bit acidic there, and my DD didn't like us to touch them to get them clean or put cream on.

MrTumblesCrackWhore · 08/03/2012 21:12

I had the most hideous - what I know now to be- cystitis when I was growing up. I couldn't describe the pain to my parents as I didn't have the understanding of where it was coming from. I didn't really wee much more often but it always left a horrible dull burning ache.

Kenobi · 08/03/2012 21:14

I did think wonder about that country but she got her last visible spot about 10 days ago, so surely they'd all have cleared up by now?

OP posts:
countrybump · 08/03/2012 21:20

Sorry, I can't remember how long it took for the spots to clear up, I just remember the ones around her bottom seemed to take ages and were the ones that were causing her most problems. They may well have taken 10 days or more to clear up.

But, it could be thrush, or a UTI, or nothing much! Maybe just see how she is tomorrow and make an appointment with your GP if it's still bothering her.

Kenobi · 08/03/2012 21:24

I'll get us to the doc's.

Wild imagination now firmly stuffed back in box - thank you everyone.

Though I wish she was less funny about her fanjo.

Thrush / uti / scratched bits? my DD (5) has a habit of wiping too hard / scratching herself somehow and making it sore... the amount of times I have explained, just gentle wipes..... Confused

BlackLetterDay · 08/03/2012 21:43

Maybe she is funny about her fanjo because it's generally (the most) a very sensitive part. My ds2 is very funny about cleaning his delicates, I realise now because he has words, because "it tickles". I can't actually do anything about it, I can't not wipe poo off his willy because "it tickles", fgs roll on potty training. Having your ds laughing his head off as you wipe him is quite disconcerting Hmm.

GreyTS · 08/03/2012 21:43

Could be vulvitis, DD1 has this at the moment, not serious irritation of the area, caused by lots of things, wet swim suit, tight pants, washing powder reaction. Just needs hydrocortisone cream but would let GP have a look in case of a UTI.

EustaciaVye · 09/03/2012 08:06

Possibly vulvovaginitis. Check with your doctor.

Kenobi · 09/03/2012 13:06

Had to google vulvitis, had never heard of it. It's amazing us ladies get through the day without something going wrong with our fanjos, frankly Grin

Thanks so much everyone. I couldn't get an appt for today but have one for next week.

Have no idea how doc is going to get a look at her nethers without a massive meltdown but needs must.
