Giving baby paracetamol &/or ibuprofen - I'm confused!

My 13 month old has an ear infection so is on antibiotics. He had Calpol 1st thing (breakfast time, with the antibiotics) and I've been told you can give Ibuprofen at the same time but not sure when. Can I give it now before he's due the next dose of Calpol?

I also only gave 5mls Calpol even though it says he can have 10mls now he's over 12months because he's only just over 12months, would you give 10mls?
He's also got teeth coming through.

I have been told by GP that you can give ibuprofen in between Calpol ie both are 4-6 hourly doses so just give theother 2-3 hours after the first and keep alternating (I find I have to write down waht I have given when - especially if ABs too so that I don't end up overdosing the DCs though Blush ).
I have been advised to do this when DD had a particularly high temp that wouldn't come down with just Calpol. I would only do it if DC was obviously in severe pain or had a very high temp that wasn't responding to just one or the other.

If the calpol is keeping him happy for long enough then you don't need to alternate. The actual guidelines (NICE) say that you should try one and if it's not working then try the other. Alternating isn't standard practice and isn't usually recommended unless, as seeline says, the temperature isn't responding or your child is in severe discomfort or pain and it is usually by a doctor - not a MNer! :)

It's not so much the a temperature, just the constant grizzling and crying. He's very unsettled but has been checked out (is on antibiotics).
He was due the next dose of Calpol so I gave Ibuprofen instead, just need him to have a nice long sleep now!
