old chestnut - green poo in a newborn

I should know this but... My two week old has consistently green, frothy poo. With number one, I solved the problem by 'block' feeding - using one breast for three hours, and then switching. Number two only feeds every three to four hours, so I can't use the same solution. I think I already have a blocked duct after she slept for 4.5 hours this afternoon. What can/should I do? Will this resolve itself as my supply settles down? Is there anything I can do to help? (And anything I can do to stop my boobs exploding...?)

I've no personal experience, but believe that expressing some milk before feeding off the same breast can help your baby get to the hindmilk more quickly.

Thanks, Truff. I was feeling a bit desperate so it's great to have a suggestion. I'm a little concerned that it may artificially boost my supply (which is pretty daft already) though...

Any change Vinick?
I've got a very healthy milk supply too. I express every day to keep a stock of milk either in the freezer for babysitting (not often but comes in handy) or for DH to do a night feed from time to time. I figure it will settle down eventually

Vinick- green poo in a newborn is on the normal spectrum as long as your baby seems healthy.

No need to engineer getting the hind milk IMO.

If you post this in bottle/breastfeeding section, you'll get some more help/suggestions. Smile

Doh! Was so confuzzled that I forgot about the breast/bottle feeding section.

Weelll... I did express a little for a couple of feeds when I was really engorged and I also made a point of re-offering the same breast if she asked to feed again within two hours and... this morning we have had two yellow nappies and less gas! Of course she's still rolling around and grumbling in her sleep, so it's not a magic panacaea for gastric unpleasantness, but she has seemed a bit more comfortable whilst actually pooing. Also, I got a five hour stretch of sleep last night, which means that I can once again figure out the various sections of the talkboard!

Essentially, I think my supply is just settling down... I was provoked into posting by DH who always wants to fix things. I shall present this as 'fixed by WheresVinick' and demand plaudits chocolate, but essentially I think it was fixed by nature (and that green poo is not the total disaster DH remembers - he's still traumatised by non-sleeping, endless-eating DD1!)

Thanks chaps!

Great to hear you have progress! Never mind if it was going to happen anyway, take credit for solving the 'problem' Wink
