How long until I take DS to doctor for diarrhoea

He was at the doctor on monday after vomiting, fever and diarrhoea on Sunday/Sunday night. She said it was a 24 hour thing and that he was clearly on the mend. Which seemed fair. But he hasn't had a normal bowel movement since then and has had diarrhoea again properly since Tuesday evening. He's drinking and eating, although not as usual. He's not quite his usual self but not super poorly either.

All research I do online says the main risk is dehydration. He's clearly not dehydrated as he is drinking, is mouth is nice and wet and he's still weeing. So do we just keep sticking it out? DH and I feel that we have to take him tomorrow if he still has diarrhoea. What do you all think?

I would phone NHS direct and ask their advice.

We were always advised to stop food for 12-24 hours and just stick with water and juice, nothing with milk. It then give tummy time to heal, if you keep feeding him, it will just continue.

Also as long as his drinking and weeing, I wouldn't bother with GP.

I took DS2 to the OOD at the weekend as he had a really high temp (which turned out to be an ear infection) and he had diarrhoea for 10 days ever since he came down with the same sick bug as the rest of us did...he's 15 months btw.

I was concerned that it wasn't showing any signs of stopping but like your DS he wasn't dehydrated and was eating/drinking relatively normally.

OOD wasn't overly concerned and said that as he was hydrated and not exactly poorly in himself they wouldn't do anything and that 10 days although a long time wasn't unheard of and if it hadn't stopped by wednesday to go back to regular GP. By monday things were pretty much back to normal...so I would say give it a few days to see how it goes.

I did ask about milk etc and he said to just carry on as normal which we did.

there is no need to withhold food if he is hungry. What age is he as it depends on the age of the child as to how long you should leave until consulting a doctor. From nhs website:

Babies

Contact your GP or health visitor urgently for advice if your baby has had six or more episodes of diarrhoea in the past 24 hours.

Children

Contact your GP if your child has:

-had six or more episodes of diarrhoea in the past 24 hours
-diarrhoea and is vomiting at the same time
-diarrhoea that is particularly watery
-diarrhoea that has blood in it
-diarrhoea that lasts for longer than two weeks

My DS is 15 months - he had D&V for 8 days (rotavirus as we had a stool sample taken)- at one point we were in the childrens ward with him as he got v dehydrated and was refusing to drink. The Consultant said that the main thing was to ensure he was still passing urine.
We were advised to stop dairy and force water in with syringe if we had to the gut needs time to heal. But I don't mean stop BF-ing - which is different type of dairy IFYKWIM

I would contact GP or NHS Direct (who should get you a call from OOO GP) and once you get to see them ask for a stool sample. Hopefully he just has rotavirus - but worth to check.

Thanks all. He is off to gp this morning. He is still getting constant dirty nappies and this morning, he wasn't dehydrated but he also was not super hydrated so I am concerned he's starting to dehydrate. Dh says he has been drinking but not as much as usual so I feel there's a slow dehydration happening. Dh is going to take a dirty nappy with him in case they want to do a stool sample.
