Dd1 5 a week ago had a massive retching night not sick just strong tummy pains. Then every afternoon since ,from about 3pm tummy pains returned, off food in evening, sat saw doc and said wind and gave a light medcine. Sun she was worse and she was admitted to hosp for tests. All came back clear . She is weeing and when she does eat she poos. In hosp she was on a drip for almost 48 hrs. She has been out over 24 hrs and again last night and this evening she complains of tummy ache. She is not pulling a fast one as she goes white and is off food ( very unlike her). We have a medcine to give her before food. It works in the day but not the evening.
We have been told its a possible virus but no idea how long it will go on for. Has anybody had anything similar or can shine any light please as it is getting us all down seeing her like this.

Did they check for allergies or anything. Have you tracked what she is eating, what makes it worse etc? Gluten, lactose, etc etc? Intolerance would be my first thought if infection / virus ruled out

Rosa · 22/02/2012 21:30

No they said that if it was an allergy to food the tummy ache would be constant. We have eliminated fizzy drinks, strong acidic fruit/ veg . She is eating pretty plain as it is and tonight she ate 1/2 bit of ham and bread / water. 3 bites of banana. It comes on mainly in the afternoon. Or if she is tired. Thing is she is sleeping more and napping in the afternoon as well.

Wonder if any doctors around tonight?
Bump

Not a dr, but if it's a virus, the tummy ache could be due to glands in the tummy.
My nephew had this for a while, had all sorts of tests to rule other illnesses out. It lasted about 3 or 4 weeks - pale, napping more, would say he was hungry, have a couple of mouthfuls and feel full.

If you're worried, go back to your gp to check him again, that's what they're there for :) Hope he's feeling better soon.

Rosa, I have something very similar going on here with 8y old DD. She has cold symptoms on and off and a pain in her tummy on and off. This has been going on for weeks, we have been to the doctor twice, who couldn't find anything ('probably a virus'). She has been constipated, had sort of diarrohoea and I was called to take her home from school today because she vomited. She's eating ok. Similarly she is very pale and looks unwell when she has the pain in her tummy. I had a lot of pains in my tummy as a child too. One of the doctors said that if, for example, they have a cold virus they get pains in their tummy because of swollen glands in the abdomen (similar to swollen glands in the neck) The other doc thought there might be a psychological element to it e.g. worries about school. There is a bit of this going on definitely and the doctor emphasised that the symptoms are real, a bit like butterflies in your tummy or a knot in your stomach when you are feeling nervous. She is quite highly strung. There is also a tummy bug going around the school that apparently goes away and comes back again, although the symptoms seem to be more severe. I don't know if this helps in any way. To be honest I am at my wits end. Helpfully the teacher told her today that she was missing too much school through being ill... I don't know what the morning will bring.

My DD had something similar just before Christmas, she was in pain for 4 days and after going to the GP twice, she was rushed into hospital, as they thought it was appendicitis, turns out it was Mesenteric Adenitis, the only thing to help was calpol for the pain , hot water bottle on the tummy and soothing! It continued for another 3 weeks then went! I felt completely helpless, she was just run down and in turn the glands swelled, it scared her but she is fine now but at hospital they said it could trigger again if ill/run down.
I do hope your DD is well soon.

Might seem unrelated, but really isn't:

Is there a family history of headaches or migranes?

CornflowerB · 22/02/2012 22:15

fedup10 that is so helpful thank you. Your name just about sums me upSmile
Rosa, hope that helps you too and that your DD feels better soon

There is some info on patient uk: www.patient.co.uk/health/Mesenteric-Adenitis.htm

Onetwothreeoops · 22/02/2012 22:24

My DS was diagnosed with mesenteric adenitis just last week. His only symptom is this awful stomach pain that has him doubled over and it goes on for a couple of hours at a time, usually in the afternoon.

He has had it for over two weeks now and it does seem to easing but I will take him back for more investigation if it hasn't gone by the end of this week.

Good luck getting a diagnosis for your dc.

Glad I could help CornflowerB:)
It really is a horrible thing to go through, my DD was always in the fetal position, doubled up in pain and crying:(
I have told her teacher what the hospital have said, just so they know! I also explained to my DD that the teacher knows but not to ever pretend, (just in case she milks the sympathy card).
I think I need a new name as not fedup anymore:)

Thanks for this however she also had a ultrasound scan and they said that her glands didd't look swollen - so this I think was eliminated. Mind you it does seem to tick all the boxes. It doesn't help that we are about 4000 miles from our gp .... Thank you all and I hope your dc all get better soon.
