HOW can I get my 17mo DS to take antibiotics? Please help

He has tonsilitis. Yesterday we got some antibiotics (orange flavoured) which made him vomit as soon as it was down his throat. I then tried giving it with a syringe but it was violently spat out.

Went back to the GP and got an alternative antibiotic. I managed to get a tiny bit down him last night but 30 seconds later he vomited it back up along with all his dinner. Same this morning.

Any advice? This is getting me really stressed and him really upset. I do not want want to keep trying if all that's going to happen is him vomiting and hence getting dehydrated but obviously he needs to take the medicine. Not sure what to try next. The pharmacist said that I should not mix it with food but that it was okay to take immediately after food. I can't see much difference so am tempted to try mixing it with fromage frais but am worried that this will stop it from working. What would you do?

I'd call another pharmacist and ask.

Mixing it with food is no good unless you can be 100% sure that they will eat the whole thing otherwise they will miss part of the dose.

Mix into a small yoghurt, teaspoon of chocolate spread, mashed up banana, tiny bit of juice or lemonade (i know i know but needs must!) or just bribe with a chocolate button?

Use a tiny amount of each and encourage, don't force it. Just include the dosed food in a normal meal and hopegully it'll go down without him noticing Hmm

Two days on from being prescribed and not one drop of medicine has gone in and stayed in. Nothing seems to work. i've tried mixing it with everything i can think of (after go-ahead from GP) including his two favourites (tuna and hummous) which have such strong tastes I was hoping he wouldn't spot that they'd been doctored. He spat them out and in fact the tuna made him sick. I have lost track of the number of times he's vomited and he is now dehydrated despite that fact that i am still BF. Last night DP and I tried the restraint/syringe approach but that made him crazy with anxiety and he vomited again.

This morning he wont take any food that involves a fork or spoon, regardless of whether there is medicine in it. This worries me as I think he does have a bit of an appetite, he's just suspicious of the food.

Completely lost as to what to do next. I'm considering asking the GP about the AB injection and have started a thread on this.

Prob too late to help you op- but if anyone comes along looking for advice on this I've had success by putting the banana flavoured antibiotic in my 20 month olds bottle of milk. Thank heavens because trying to get her to take it directly was extremely stressful and distressing (for us both!)
