Baby has measles - any experience of this?

my almost 6 month old baby has just been diagnosed with measles. She has had an awful cough and runny nose for about ten days, a high fever for 3 days and now a rash.

I am a bit shocked as I thought this was quite a dangerous disease in babies. My gp was fairly unpeturbed as she says she is over the worst.

My 3 year old hasn't developed it. Nor have I or my husband.

How unusual is this?

I feel like I must be doing something wrong as my children always get these rare illnesses (son has had chicken pox as a 7 week old baby, scarlet fever, shingles as a toddler, hand foot and mouth twice, chest infections, ear infections, d and v lots). He is ill non stop through the winter. Am I being paranoid or is this just bad luck?

Dont have firect experience of measles, but I'm sure its nothing to do with you! Smile has he not been vaccinated?
Still vaccinations do not have a 100% take so a small number of babies will remain vulnerable. Dd1 had rubella despite having the mmr.
Somd kuds (like some adrs) are just mire prone to illnesses, its in your genes and immuns system.

Dont beat yourself up for it, you really have nothing to blame yourself for!!

Apologies for spellingsBlush its supposed to be "some kids (like some adults)" and she referred to your dd!!Blush

Thank you!

Yes my son (3 years) has been unwell a lot in his short life but he had the mmr and is not unwell at the moment. Maybe he just has a poor immune system?

The baby is only 5 months and it's her first proper illness so I am just hoping it's not the start of things to come, illnesses all the time like he had.......

The thing about measles, as with any disease, is that it does come in varying severity. My db had literally 2 spots and wasn't ill, me and my dsis were covered and miserable.

But at the same time as my db had 2 spots another child, who almost certainly caught the same wave was hospitalised and had permanent hearing loss.

Your 3yo should be protected from the first MMR, but in a similar case round here they gave the older sibling the second dose of MMR (preschool booster) early (she wasn't 3 at that point) for "added protection" as soon as the younger one was diagnosed.

Of course it could be that your 3yo had it, but a very mild case, and as the one to give it to your baby.

Thanks DeWe, that's interesting.

Is there anyone whose baby has had it?
