Antibiotics - finishing the course at reduced dose?

Hello -
Last week our practice nurse wrongly precribed antibiotics for my 5 mo. 5ml, 3 x a day for 7 days.
Saw the dr later in the week who said we must finish the course now we've started it, but we should reduce the dose to 2.5ml.
Needless to say my lo hates the medicine, hates taking it, and i hate giving it.

My question:-

do I give 2.5ml 3 x a day for the remainder of the 7 days?

OR give 2.5ml 3 x a day until the bottle's finished, which will now be twice as long?

I know I should have asked the dr this at the time but didn't think - now surgery's closed until Mon. I want to stop the medicine asap but don't want to enter into the complications of not finishing the course properly.
Any medics out there - pls advise!!

thank you so much!

Is it amoxicillin? I would plan on giving the 7 days altogether as that is a usual length of a course of the medicine. Best plan though, is to call in to, or phone, the pharmacy where you got it from as the pharmacist is the best person to advise you.

With antibiotics, there is often a range of possible doses to give - the fact the dose was reduced doesn't always mean that they had the wrong dose to start with. EG I could be given 1000mg 3 x day , it makes me feel sick so another Dr tells me to just take 500mg 3 x day. Both are 'normal' doses, IYKWIM.

Yes, it is amoxcillin - thanks.

And it's not that the wrong dose was prescribed - it's that antibiotics shouldn't have been prescribed at all!

thanks for your replies - v helpful.

How old is dc? My dd has had amoxicillin several times and we were told the under 1 dose is 2.5ml and over 1 is 5ml.

Just do the seven days. Though my pharmacist said seven says is like using - I can't remember the cliche - something big to treat something small, and that five days would be fine.

Remembered the cliche. A sledgehammer to crack a nut
