first molar on the roof of the mouth?

My DS is 17 months, over the Christmas period he got his molars. He?s not in any current discomfort and his appetite has returned.
One of his molars top left back has appeared more on the roof of the mouth (the palate?), rather than the gumline. I?ve called the G.P and the receptionist referred me to a dentist.
He?s not great about opening his mouth wide for me to have a look, so thinking the dentist might be a futile at the moment. I have heard about milk teeth popping up and then going back down. I?m wondering if this is a normal occurrence and that his tooth might ?drift? into the right place.
Does anyone have any experience of this?

It really sounds like you should take him to the dentist.
The dentist will be a pro at getting little ones to open mouths.
