Ds 1 (8) has had it for nearly 2 weeks now (no temp, eating ok) and of course ds2 (3) has come down with it.

He has been coughing and snotty since saturday but wasnt too worried as he was eating and no temp, then yesterday morning he was burning up - temp well over 39 degrees and he is off his food so took him to GP and (surprise surprise) its just a virus and his chest is clear.

Last night/early this morning he was coughing so much he was retching/heaving. He also had a temp again but would not let me give him any calpol.

wwyd? How long do I leave him til I take him back?

My dd had it and also refused to take calpol, she had a high temp for 3 nights and the cough for 3 weeks. Lots of fluids x

Marne · 21/12/2011 17:30

Both mine have had it, dd1 is still coughing after 2 weeks (mainly at night), Gp told us it might last 3 weeks.

Becaroooodolf · 21/12/2011 18:57

My ds and dd have it, dd is 1 years old and seems to be coping by sleeping through it. Ds 3 has the cough really bad, I gave him Tixylix which it appears he is allergic to and had to take him to the emergency doctors, and his chest is that bad he has been given a brown and blue inhaler Xmas Hmm
Hope yours feel better soon.

TimeForChristmasCake · 21/12/2011 19:48

My nearly 2yr old is just getting over it and has been thoroughly miserable with it. Raging temperature, cold and nasty cough. Dr said temperature could last 2-3 days which it did. I gave calpol, karvol rub and Vaseline on nose. Poor thing has been really rough and it's been hard work! Sounds like it's doing the rounds unfortunately.

AliBellandthe40jingles · 21/12/2011 19:50

Mine have had it on and off for a fortnight.

DS1 (3.5) is I think finally on the mend properly. He still isn't eating much though, but that is what he does when he feels poorly.

DS2 (9 months) I took back to the GP today because the inhaler we were prescribed wasn't doing much, and now we've got antibs for a chest infection. Lovely.

Knownothingknowitall · 21/12/2011 20:34

My 3 have had it too, finally seem to have come to the end of it 2 weeks later and they've lovingly passed it on to me!

Still off their food though.

Hope it passes quickly for you all.

PaigeTurner · 21/12/2011 21:27

DS just spent a lovely few hours in hospital as he had raging temp, rapid heartbeat and dodgy breathing/cough. Had a chest x ray and given anti bs. Looking forward to three weeks of coughing. Ugh. Sympathies to everyone else dealing with it, it's very nasty.

pixierara · 21/12/2011 22:03

My 3 year old is starting to come down with something...lots of coughing, red cheeks and blocked nose...am dosing her up with Sterimar (natural isotonic sea water to relieve the nose congestion) and calpol....hope better by Christmas...wish all yours well as well!!!

PandaG · 21/12/2011 22:06

Yep. DS is 12 and has been hacking for well over a fortnight. Loss of normal appetite, tired, snotty...I think it is a combination of very busy first term at secondary school and therefore knackered, plus a heavy cold.

Becaroooodolf · 22/12/2011 11:12

oh dear sorry to hear so many dc are ill with it Sad

GP said his chest was clear but he sounds v wheezy/crackly to me Hmm

If he has another bad night will take him back tomorrow.

Hope they all feel better for santa x

Yep DD had it last week. Temp reached 40.5 and we went to a&e but just a virus, chest clear. We were advised to alternate calpol and neurofen every 2 hours which we did throughout the day and night. It lasted 3 days though she's still snotty and coughing, fever is gone and she's eating. It took alot out of her though, she's been sleeping 13 hours at night!

PiratecatClaus · 22/12/2011 13:20

ugh, same here. dd9 has started it again, she has had 3 bouts of coughing and colds in as many months, if not less.

bloody rubbish isn't it. i had the cough for 3 weeks. wishing everyone well thoughts.x

ElmosChristmasWish · 22/12/2011 15:06

Becaroooodolf · 22/12/2011 18:21

My DD has been ill for nearly 3 weeks now. Terrible cough which causes retching and vomiting but mainly at night. She's been off food but still feeding (though much less. ) sorry others are going through it but reassured that it's doing the rounds. It feels like its going on forever though. She seems better then gets a temp again...

banana87 · 22/12/2011 23:18

My GP said the cough can take 4-6 weeks to go and for some kids it's turning into an infection because of how long it's lasting. He said they are giving inhalers to those who have been coughing ages, might want to get your DC checked out fluffy.

ShowOfHands · 22/12/2011 23:19

Yup, same here. DD in reception and the whole class was snotty and coughing towards the end of term. DD's been off colour for a few weeks, coughing a lot at night, retching with it occasionally. She didn't eat much for about a week but the last two days seems to have started eating everything in the cupboards/fridge/not nailed down and has run around singing and dancing non stop today so I think she's fighting it finally. She was v croupy for a few days too.

DS is 15wo and on his third blooming cold. DH has a sore throat and I have earache. I think it's all the same virus tbh.

AliBellandthe40jingles · 22/12/2011 23:25

We are still going with it here. My ears are sore, and I keep getting headaches.

DS1 is now much better, he slept 14 hours straight last night and then ate 3 slices of toast for breakfast.

DS2 is on his 2nd day of antibiotics and has really picked up, but now DH has really gone down with his and is just coughing, coughing all the time.

Showy - a bit of BM up the nose before a feed helps with the congestion, incase you don't already know :)

ScarlettIsWalking · 22/12/2011 23:30

The cough goes on for about 6 weeks. It starts with an awful cold sometimes with temp then hits the chest with a vengeance. This can turn into a secondary infection as the immune system in so weak. Dd got it earlier in the term. It really doesn't seem to shift does it...

fluffylegs · 22/12/2011 23:33

Ok thanks banana. I've been to the doc and no infection then but still coughing and temperature.
Also has anyone else's DC had eyes stuck together? Like connunctivitis but without the red and soreness. It's just non stop gunk.

fluffylegs · 23/12/2011 09:15

Oh dear and the latest phase of this virus appears to be diarreah ( never been able to spell that word)

I was the first to get it - I'm so fed up of it (grumpy)

CocktailQueen · 23/12/2011 10:58

If it's a virus there's no point in taking him back again. Rest, plenty of fluids, calpol/nurofen alternately to keep temp dpwn. My ds had this last term and the cough lasted 3 weeks. Horrible. He couldn't sleep as whenever he lay down he'd cough till he retched.
