My 18 mo has terrible cough at the moment causing him to bring up food and water and milk. As I write this we have been up to him 4 times already as it is waking him!!!! What can I give him to help? Do cough medicines actually work? He's also poorly with a tummy bug and a temperature so really needs to sleep!

Calpol and Neurofen to help with the temp and aches and pains from coughing.
You can give calpol and then a dose of neurofen 2 hours after.

Have you raised the head end of his bed/cot matress?

I hope he feels better soon and you get some sleep

Has he got a cold as well? If so then anything that will alleviate the congestion should also help the cough.

olbas oil/karvol can help a lot, as can a damp towel over the radiator to make sure the room isn't too dry.

Def raise the head of the cot to ease it

Hold him as upright as possible when he does wake to help him clear it

Steam can help (hold in the bathroom while the shower is running hot, rather than near a kettle or anything :) )

I'll try and think of more.

My gp just prescribed me an asthma spray for my dd2. She is just over 2 and had the same problem for over 2 weeks whilst getting through a cold. She has very mild eczema and she said that although he does not thinknshe has asthma the spray will help with the night cough. Worked a treat. Only needed to use it for about 5 nights

Nelsons honey and lemon cough syrup is good and is 'natural' so you don't need to worry about over-drugging is already on calpol etc.

We use a vaporiser and lots of pillows

a small square of chocolate. Honest -it's got something in it that suppresses coughing apparently.
