How long did it take you child to recover after getting grommets put in?

My 11mo DS has been having problems with recurrent ear infections for the last 4-5months. We saw an ENT surgeon today who recommended he has grommets, so it's being done in 3 weeks.

It's being done as day surgery so he'll be home the same day. The surgeon said he'd be fine to go to nursery the following day, but that seems a bit quick to me.

I don't think I will send him to nursery only 24hrs post-op, but how should I expect him to be? Is it likely that he'll be completely ok the next day, or is he going to need a couple of days to recover?? We've got his first birthday party 3 days later, so do you think he'd be well enough for that (although that's more for me than him - it's mostly taking place during his nap Grin)

My DD had hers done at age 3 and was hopping round the room asking for pizza a couple of hours post op.

Ds had them first at 20 months. His temperature came up within 2-4 hours of the op. He was put on antibiotics the next day and ended up back at hospital 3 days later with severe vomitting which may have been a reaction to the general, or may have been a coincidental bug.
He was about a fortnight recovering.

The second time he had them age 3yrs he took about an hour to recover enough to do anything except lie down and sob, but within 3 hours ate a large dinner. He would have been fine to go to preschool the next day if it hadn't been Saturday.

Thanks for the advice. It sounds like as long as there are no complications he'll be back to normal pretty quickly

My daughter had grommets and adenoids in August, within four hours she was doing cartwheels in the house!! Wink

My consultant told me I had to keep her off nursery for two weeks, I managed 10 ten days, then sent her in!

She is a different child since she had them though, no more snotty noses and her behaviour has improved dramatically!
