How can I help DS to get to sleep (tickly cough and congestion)

Ds 5.8yrs has had a cough for a couple of days, his coughs are always made worse because he is asthmatic, although his asthma is under control he has been coughing uncontrollably on and off all day.

He coughed until he brought up mucus earlier (sorry for TMI) and was instantly better but he is now coughing again and is very congested. I have got a bowl with eucalyptus oil and warm water in the room and he says that it helps when I pat and rub his back but can anyone suggest anything else for me to try.

I must add he is not the slightest bit wheezy it is just a nasty cough, just feel sorry for him because he's tired but can't sleep:(

Wet towel on the radiator to keep air moist
Try those plug-ins. I have a karvol one which is good
Warm bath just before bed
Raise mattress slightly, add another pillow or something under mattress
Vicks vapour rub on chest
Karvol drops on pillow
Have a drink of water next to his bed he can have a sip in the night

if he is asthmatic and takes medication for that, it might be worth talking to the astma nurse.
a cold can play havoc with the airways.
our asthma nurse advised me to give ds salbutamol spray half an hour before going to bed to open the airways so he can cough before going to bed. it helped him, but it might be better for you to consult the gp or astma nurse before doing that.
