Anyone's dc had a tongue tie op as an older child?

I am in the process of trying to get ds1's frenulum operated on. He is having terrible gastric trouble which I am fairly sure is related to his tongue tie.

Just wondering how long a recovery time is involved. How sore is it after, how much spech therapy is needed etc

He is 6yo btw

I had mine snipped at 11, GA and a night in hospital. As far as I remember I had a sore mouth for a couple of days after and milked it like mad for ice cream.

I started going to an elocution and drama teacher after that to sort my speech out and it was so much fun that I carried on going to her until I left for uni, although I think I was speaking better within a couple of months.

How affected was your speech afterwards? Did your tongue feel weird to you for a while?

Both of my brothers had their's done at the same time, the youngest was 1 the oldest 7. As fas as I remember the eldest suffered more than the youngest but not badly. Younger one hardly noticed a thing, older one had a sore mouth for a few days and was a bit more knocked out by the GA. Nothing awful though.

I don't remember my tongue feeling weird but my speech improved quite a bit. I had to repeat myself a lot less!

Was yours done purely because of your speech, or did you have any other problems with it?

DS1 has no obvious problems with his - he can stick his tongue out, it's not heart shaped and his speech is fine. But it was enough to affect breastfeeding, and if my suspicion is correct, then it's affecting his chewing and swallowing too.

If any of the useless MWs, HVs or GPs had spotted his woefully inefficient breastfeeding when he was tiny (oh, yes, they feed all the time and other "helpful" comments were all I got even when he was 11% below birthweight on day 10), it could have been dealt with way back then instead of it being a much bigger issue now .

Purely speech.

We didn't even know I had it until I was 11. I had speech therapy from about 4-6yo, then DM arranged elocution lessons in an attempt to get my speech sorted properly before I started secondary. The teacher spotted it within 10 minutes.

It wasn't until I read on Mumsnet about it causing problems with feeding that I asked DM and she confirmed she hadn't been able to breastfeed me.

My nephew had it done at 8, GA, out the same day and it was sore but not overly so for a few days.

It didn't do anything to his speech, although he'd had SALT a few years before it was noticed
