Thread 2 of 2 of a paranoid parent - sore bits

DD (3yo) has been complaining of pain in her fairy/girly bits. It looks slightly red and hurts when I part it to clean it. It tends to improve with a clean and some sudocrem but she complains of it every day. Again its been checked by the gp and they've checked for a uti, but all clear. We don't clean the area with anything but water and baby wipes, again any advice would be appreciated.

My thoughts are that it could be a failure to clean properly as she's learning to use the toilet herself rather than the potty in preparation for nursery.

DD used to get this, she could not be bothered to wipe herself dry properly (she would wait till she was busting to go to the loo too cos she did not want to stop her game!) - the GP said it was a sort of eczema caused by urine

i would avoid baby wipes and soap in the area though.

did the GP also check for worms or just UTI?

I would avoid baby wipes completely-cotton wool and water is the way to go. Make sure she drinks enough, and cut down on foods which may raise her oxalic acid levels (peanuts, cucumber, spinach and a few others-I had a list from the doc but can't find it to add in here). These foods or general dehydration can cause very acidic wee which leads to recurrent soreness (I speak from bitter experience).

Agree with the others, avoid wipes, they are full of nasty things that can cause iritation, use water and cotton wool and use sudocrem.

Wipe with a flannel with just water, dry properly, and put her in a clean pair of knickers

Thanks for the reminder about the wipes, seems obvious now you say it. Sudocrem is a godsend and does alleviate the redness quickly.

There are no other signs of worms like itchiness, should I still get that checked?

If in doubt then treat her for worms and see if the symptoms go.

We used nappy rash cream - bepanthan on DD when she was a bit sore worked over night - much better than sudocrem :)
