what sort of abdomen pain is this?

dd9 went to the docs this morning, as she has had knot like pain, to the left of her belly button. Doc said he thinks it could be colicky?
She had a fever friday night, suddenly ( we were out for a meal), and she had in sat evening, and tonight. Not constipated.

No sickness no runny bum, want to eat normally. Has had a sore throat for a few days previous to friday, and sore throat now.

The pain is excruciating.

any ideas. he said calpol and come back if no better .

i can't find anything online.

There is a funny virus going round here at the moment, fever, shivering, tummy ache, headache, sore throat/ears, dizzyness, my dd has had all of these in random combinations since thursday. Now she has a streaming cold, the odd combination of symptoms had me confused but apparently it is a virus that is doing the rounds at the moment. Does the calpol help her?

hi, dd has complained of feeling dizzy yes. She banged her head really bad thursday night and i thought when the fever came, the shivering it was related to that, but now obv i think it's this bug.

The tummy pain is very violent, is it the same for your dd? My dd describes it as knots, all the time, that suddenly tighten into one big knot. I am at a loss to help. The calpol isn't touching it.

She seemed to be worse with the headache and dizzyness than the tummyache. I was alternating the calpol and ibuprofen every 2 hours during the worst of it but it was only just keeping on top of the pain/fever. She is just getting better now but it had me worried for a day or two. Would a hot water bottle help? (not fab in this weather, I know!), don't know what else to suggest really, hope she is feeling better soon.

You can get mesenteric adenitis following a throat infection. This is swollen glands in the centre of the abdomen of near the right hip. I'm not sure though whether this pain is a colicky type, which is what you describe.

It certainly could be a viral thing with fever and abdominal cramping without the D&V.

hi thanks for advice, the stomach seems to be the one and only thing thats keeping her in pain.

i have booked to go back to the gp today, but am not sure there's any point. I feel rather helpless, esp when the doc doesn't have any real pointers iyswim.

sneezecake, the pain is only on the left directly by and about 4 inches out to the left of her belly button.

i really am not sure what to do, whether to see it through til tomorrow or go back today.

No matter the cause of the pain, a heat pack of some description will help. Also, have a google for tummy massage, if it is a colicky pain, massaging the area correctly will help

If she is in so much pain that standard pain relief isn't helping, I would take her back to the GP and her get checked again. Hope she's better soon

hi well the doctor said it could well be Mesenteric Adenitis, tho it is usually on the right not the left.

Am to go back if it worsens, then he'll consider hospital, but it fairly confident it will improve in the next couple days.

Hope she improves over the next few days. The good thing is if its left sided there arent many common or garden things that affect that side apart from constipation, which it isnt. So may be swollen gland - 'patient uk' has info on adenitis. Warmth and pain relief may ease it but if warmth makes it worse stop as if it is an inflamed gland heat might increase the inflammation.

If it is some form of inflammation, would Ibuprofen be better than Calpol?

hi, will look up your advice. i am doing the calpol/ibuprofen intermittently as we need anything to help the sudden pain.

She can't have a hot water bottle on there either, it's too tender. Good to know there's nothing major on the left thanks.

I don;t know what it is, piratecat - but it sounds exactly like the sort of pain my ds sometimes gets after a lot of exercise. He doubles up with pain and sometimes cries - even in front of other people and he's 10!

Doctor says "one of those things - probably a sort of stitch - he'll grow out of it"Very helpful!

i am going back today, there must be something for the pain, maybe antibiotics, i don't know cos i am NOT A PIGGIN DOCTOR grrr.

My DD (15) has had this for the last few days. All the symptoms you describe and the tummy ache particularly bad.

Seems ok now but was in alot of pain for three days or so.

piratecate, I just read your OP and thought 'mesenteric adenitis' which ties in nicely with sore throat.

However the quality of the pain does sound more colicky which just means the pain is caused by sudden muscle spasms in the bowel.

As it is now 4 days after your first post, I think you are doing the right thing to get her reassessed. There might still not be a 'cure', some things you just have to let run their course, but you should be confident that she has been fully assessed.

it's hard to say whether a return to gp will be worth it given the varying stories on that thread. Do i sit it out, but the weekend is upon us and no gp's are open?

Will ask the doctor if antibiotics are worth it, in case it's a bacterial infection causing the lymph gland reaction.

My dd is 9 and has had loads of sore throats, coughs, colds and never had this reaction form her glands before. Wonder why this happens.

Brdigitbigknickers, had your dd ever had a reaction to a virus like this before? Is she, like my dd free of d+v etc...?

Perhaps it's this particular virus that is causing these lympth gland in the stomach reactions?

Pacific, thanks for your input, it's appreciated muchly! Her pain began suddenly on saturday so we are on day 6 now, the sore throat she had was minimal, not troubling her at all. But her breath is absolutely awful, and has been for a few days leading up to the attack on saturday.

i swear i could write a book on dd's ailments so far. Obscure they have all been.

Exactly the same piratecat -no D and V, not constipated, eating ok, sore throat and a fever initially (she was sitting in the lounge wrapped up in a duvet on Sunday saying she was freezing when it was 31 degrees outside!)

She also had a bad headache with dizzyness and said she felt like the glands in her neck were inflamed.

The tummy pains were the most worrying- I was on the verge of taking her to the doctor when she seemed to improve.

dd has mild pain during the day but it's worse first thing and in the eveing, when she gets the spasms, which i have read of. I guess that when we are ill those times can be the times we feel worse, when it 'draws' iyswim.

yes dd had very sudden onset friday night, was crying, hot cold, shivering and dizzy.

let's hope they both improve much more. dd looks worn out does yours?

We are in Essex.

DD was totally worn out by it all (slept loads) but seems much better today- was ill for about 4 days in total.

My other DD had it last week but it only lasted a few days.

The receptioninst at her school told me they had had loads of girls and staff off with a similar thing over the last few weeks.

Hope she's better soon x

update, doc says today that if no better by monday, then a refferal to hosp.
