can you get a temp from a mouth ulcer?

My dd (4) has had a nasty ulcer on her gum for a few days,I think caused by me grazing it by accident with her toothbrush.She has been in pain with it, but ok,however tonight she would only eat icecream and her temp is up to 99.4 .I vaguely remember getting a temperature myself with a bad ulcer,but maybe I am mistaken.Is it common to run a temp with this,or is she coming down with something else do you think?

Not sure about the temp tbh. What are you doing to treat the ulcer?

If my dd is run down, getting or got a cold and got a temp she often gets mouth ulcers!

childrens neurofen will do the trick for pain and tmeperature.

She won't let me put anything at all on the ulcer (I have bonjela,but she refuses point blank) I have given her some calpol,and she is asleep now- all advice really welcome on anything else that might help but that doesn't sting like mad on application (that's why she won't allow the gel).

calpol is fine, dont upset her by putting stuff in her mouth,just keep her topped up with pain relief, although i prefer nurofen because of its anti inflamatory properties.

She doesn't have any other rash as yet,she's had the ulcer for about three days. I will keep an eye out though as I didn't know much about hand foot and mouth. Also thanks bigbumum,for the neurofen tip,I hadn't thought of that but I can see how it would be better than calpol,I'll give it to her if she needs another dose.

If pain really bad (which it can be with mouth ulcers) (have had them for years) you could alternate calpol and ibuprofen doses - ie calpol then 6 hours after brufen then calpol etc to keep some level of pain relief in the system.

It wouldn't surprise me. I get horrendouse mouth ulcers and my bloody glands come up. I need 4 hourly paracetamol for 3 days. I even import mouth ulcer treatment gels from Australia cos they stopped making them here! I wouldnt bother with bonjela - it stings. Iglu is much kinder and lasts longer.
Poor DD - she has my sympathy!

My dd had a large ulcer on her gum between her upper jaw and the side of her cheek which became infected. Her cheek and glands on that side of her face swelled up.
Keep an eye on it to see if it isnt healing up. Try diluted hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash.

Well today she doesn't have much of a temperature,but her eyes are watering-not red,just watering all the time-she is also off colour and while not really rough,she just wants to be on the sofa watching Peppa.I wonder if it is some other virus? There is a lot of hand/foot/mouth about according to the pharmacist,but she doesn't have any other obvious symptoms of that as far as I can see.

Her temp gone up again now after being normal all day.Now its 99.2 again,I've given her calpol as she refused the nurofen,she didn't like the taste last night. Only other symptom so far the watering eyes,she is very rarely ill so I am always worried and unsure what to do when she is.

There is a condition that young children get when they are first exposed to the herpes simplex virus (cold sores). The symptoms are exactly as you describe except they usually have multiple mouth ulcers, not cold sores round the mouth. Its because they have no immunity to the virus but once exposed they rarely get a serious response again. Have you checked for other ulcers. ?

I have and there is just the one ulcer.Gosh I hope it isn't herpes,does that mean she will get cold sores from now on,if it is? We are all cold sore free in my family so far and I'm keen to keep it that way!!

How about her tonsils? DS gets tonsillitis a lot, and it's accompanied by mouth ulcers. Either because he's run down or they sort of spread from the tonsils, I don't know.

Well she had bad breath on day one of the ulcer appearing (around Wednesday) and I looked at her tonsils then and again today,hard to see them tbh as her tongue obscures them,but they look ok and her breath is fine now.The ulcer is white and looks quite deep,its at the deepest point where her gum meets her lip at the front,and I think I may have grazed there while brushing her teeth as she has an electric toothbrush and its hard to judge the pressure of it on another person.
I'm very worried about herpes now,I did a bit of a google but I don't know how to tell the difference between a normal ulcer or a herpes lesion.She still breastfeeds a couple of times a day,am assuming that is fine if it is herpes?

If there is a single deep ulcer then maybe just a nasty aphorous (sp?) ulcer - common or garden one! Herpes (cold sores) are very common and most of the population has been infected in early childhood and is mainly immune once into adulthood. here
Looking at that I dont think DD has primary herpes but just a nasty ulcer. She has my sympathy, I get huge craters too and they are ridiculously painful. I asked my dentist if there is anything I could do and she said be careful with brushing not to scrape the gums/mouth - so I think its safe to say this is what happened to your poor LO. No quick cure I'm afraid and I always get a stinker if I eat crisps!

Thanks sneeze.I am wondering if she has picked up another virus because she's already run down from the ulcer.She had the ulcer for a few days but then went to Gymnastics for the first time,so lots of other small children,and the next day (yesterday) is when the fever started.She isn't in school so doesn't pick up many viruses.
googling again I read that herpes sores are on the boney bits and ulcers on the soft tissue,then I read the other way round hers is at the edge of each anyway. I am really prone to ulcers and so is her sister,I had hideous ones as a child,my mother would pour salt onto them (shudder),they are horrible.

If you look at NHS choices on mouth ulcers what you describe is pretty much it and also the recurrent ones. If you and her sister are prone then DD may get them too. The thought of salt on an ulcer AArrgghhh!!! They are the bane of my life!

iglu -I will look for that.Is that the stuff from Aus? My Mum did get me the odd packet of rinstead pastilles,on top of the salt pouring (literally pouring,I can still see her wincing face as she did it) I've tried bonjella but it never seems to do much.I get them if I snag my gum with a brush,or bite it.I had braces a couple of years ago and they cut many ulcers,which would then get snagged on the brackets.Horrendous. Anyway dd is still asleep,I'm hoping she will be better tomorrow,she hasn't wanted to move from my lap all day,poor little thing.

iglu is available from the chemist and is the best Ive found, but only enough to get me through the worse of the symptoms. Kenlog is the stuff i get imported from Aus its a steroid so very strong and not suitable for kids (brilliant for adults though). Bonjella is rubbish imo! Hope DD is on the mend, whether an ulcer or a virus, a week should sort it!

She's a bit better today, thanks for all the helpful advice.No temp today although the ulcer still looks nasty,and she's not eating much besides icecream and the odd biscuit.She isn't feeling as rough though,so hopefully will be back on form soon.I will go buy some iglu tomorrow.

Good A diet of ice cream can't be all bad!
