River of earwax in toddler

Grim I know. DD nearly 3 complained her ear hurt last night and wouldn't sleep. Today Grandparents have looked after her and said lots of wax came out of her ear and it was over her face in her hair. When I put her to bed I saw a couple of spots on the pillow where she had had a nap. She says her ear doesn't hurt. Is this normal?

DS2 gets a lot of earwax. I think it's fine but be careful about cleaning them as DS ended up with impacted earwax, (through him sticking his fingers in his ears not through my using cotton buds) but the doctor advised never to put anything in his ear as there's a greater risk with copious ear wax. We just put almond oil in his ears once a week (you can buy it very cheaply at the pharmacist) with a little pipet and that seems to keep them clear.

Has she perforated her eardrum? Might be worth checking with GP.

PS if you are going to think about taking Opal fruits advice and put almond oil in her ears, please make sure she doesnt have a perforated eardrum first.

Take to g.p asap sounds like an ear infection - my dd has had lots of them and they always present just as you have described.

This happened to my son it wasnt pus coloured or bloody but it was an infection which had caused his eardrum to perforate. Especially if it went all in her hair that doesn't sound like wax at all.

By the way, took her to the doctor and indeed she thought it was a perforated ear drum but no antibiotics as was told it will heal on it's own. Thanks for the advice. x
