Any experience re recovery from pinned femur fracture?

11 year old ds1 broke his femur 6 weeks ago (was pinned 5 days after) and even though it is healing well recovery seems to be slow.

Still walking with crutches and the leg seems quite weak. he sees physio once a week and we have exercises to do with him.

Dh voiced our fear today that he will never be back to normal. We keep telling ourselves it is early days yet and soon it will seem like it was never broken.

Any experiences to share?

It is really early days. I'm sure he will get back to normal.

It is really important though that he does his physio at home.

Thank you very much :)

You are right about doing the physio - it is so easy to let it slip when you have had a busy day, have three other kids who are clamouring and ds1 moaning!

We have also just borrowed an exercise bike which he has been on today.

It is funny because on Saturday I was feeling quite down about it all, but looking at him today I actually realised how far he has come :)

My ds who was also 11 broke his elbow badly almost 2 years ago. I understand your worry my son couldn't straighten his arm fully for a long time and I too thought he would never get back to normal. However 2 yeras on he is fully recovered and can straighten his arm and has no ill effects. The dr at the hospital said that children heal really well its just us adults that struggle.
Keep up the physio, and as he gets more active and gains confidence his muscle will strengten naturally.
Good luck

Thanks that is really great to know, glad your ds is fine.

I think getting back to school has really helped him - he complains less with his friends.!

He also has a broken wrist that still has pins in and a cast on
