large swollen bruise on hip - looks scary!

DD said to me about two days ago that her hip hurt, could not remember hitting it. I looked at it, and just above her hip (on her stomach actually, abdominal, rather than bone, hard to explain but right next to/above hip) there was a vague lump, slightly swollen but hardly so, thought it was that she was very muscly there (which she is) compared with both sides, and the other side is quite solid too but not as much. Vaguey purple but there seems to be veins there and the other side seems a bit purple, so hard to tell.

Nothing since then. Then this morning, she cried out in pain 'my hip hurts again!' i looked and the whole area is black/purple and very swollen and hard. not the hip, but the abdominal area on that side/above hip It looks like it might have been hit/maybe she ran into something without remembering (she is very active and often does not know she hurts herself).

But I am very worried that she might have done some harm internally as it is so black/blue and so swollen she must have hit it very hard.

I am making a GP appt this morning but wondered if anyone else knew what this is?

Oh that sounds quiet nasty.I have never experienced anything like this myself, but I think you have done the right thing getting a doctors appointment. You can never tell with lumps and bumps and if it is hurting her then it is better to be checked. Hope she is ok though :)

I discovered similar bruising on New Year's Eve and it got worse over a couple of weeks the very gradually disappeared. The other thing that comes to mind is it might be a hernia so good to see GP as soon as possible.

stidw i think that is what worried me, something like that.

He checked it thoroughly and said it was a very deep bruise. said that the location is very sensitive and that is why it was so swollen, and to expect the bruising to come out over the next few days and look even worse but not to worry! glad he told me that! It is still swollen but the bruising is turning yellowish now and is less painful for her. I am glad I went though, and he said it is always worth checking. He was very surprised she had no idea how she did it as it was such a horrid bruise!
