Asthmatic 5 yr old with bad cough. Advice needed.

DD1 is asthmatic, diagnosed as a toddler. Before now attacks always triggered by cold/chest infection. On Singulair and Becotide.

On sunday night she got a horrible barking cough. I took her to GP who said it is a typical asthmatic cough and put her on steroids. She is coughing really badly tonight.

She doesn't seem very wheezy (but sometimes it is hard to tell even when she is having an attack) but a choking awful cough. She is worn out.

Is there anything I should be doing?

Would the nebuliser help or should I call OOH GP?

DH wants to give her cough bottle but the GP told me they are no good.

Any advice?

Thanks

If she's barking then this sounds like croup. I'd get her checked over to be honest, a cough and a wheeze can both indicate a problem.

if already on singulair and becotide, potentially nebs (and presumably ventolin) definitely get her checked out asap :)
no time for messing about ime

Thanks everyone.

It has calmed down a little. I'm waiting for a call back from OOH.

She has none of her usual asthma symptoms.

She has never coughed like this before.

Could be croup. The treatment of this has changed, recommended to take them into the fresh air as steam does nothing. Bad croup (when they just bark and can't talk) needs steriods so hospital would be a plan.

Sorry, x-post with pixie Smile

Spoke to OOH nurse. She thought it sounded like croup. DH has taken dd in to see the doctor now.

DD very upset. Pleading not to have to go to hospital again.

Heartbreaking.

I am here with dd2 who is also unwell the last few days Sad

I really appreciate the advice and support.

Croup is a virus but it will come back. I hope she's on the mend soon.

Good morning.

The GP didn't think croup. He said it is an asthmatic cough and put her on the nebuliser. She was in a bit of distress in the night but much better this morning.

Fingers crossed the worst has passed.

Thanks everyone.
