MMR - is is normal to catch Rubella after the jab?

My 14month old had her MMR 4 weeks ago but now appears to have german measles. Is this normal? I thought the whole idea of the MMR was to stop little ones getting these things.

Is she small for her age, or generally delicate? My son was prem and had measles for 2 weeks after the MMR. Presumably less awful than if he hadn't been vaccinated, but he was still very ill - high temperature, rash, no feeding for the full fortnight.

No worries, as MMR is a "live" vaccine this is a common reaction. Your hv/GP should have forewarned you about this at the time of vaccination.

Wouldn't say it's normal but not unheard of. My DS got Mumps from his MMR, wasn't warned to expect that he still might get ill 21 days after the jab.
Hope your DC feels better soon.

I use to immunise babies. We always told parents there was a chance rashes could develop up to a month after immunisation. Leaflets were also given to highlight this and other possible side effects, probably not anymore...NHS cutbacks!!!!!

CP, i was warned about the rash but wasn't expecting full blown mumps jaw/cheeks etc. Personally am glad that i'm not going thru immunisation system for first time, at least with DC1 you got the explanatory leaflets etc.

Sorry for hijack Maz

poorbuthappy · 26/02/2011 22:03

all 3 of my mine had a rash after the MMR.

Mazizzy · 27/02/2011 22:32

Thanks everyone. Yes she is small for her age and does seem to have full blown symptoms. (2 days of a very high temp until rash blossomed. All over her body and head and starting to move to her arms and legs. Off her food and very clingy)
I was told I could expect reactions a couple of weeks after the jab but not 4! Poor thing is not a happy bunny at the moment.
