Recurrent/continual virus in 8 month olds baby - what could it be and when will it end?

Hi there

My 8 month old baby has been continually ill since Christmas, when her and her older sister came down with a very 'nasty' (according to GP) virus. Since then she has had chicken pox (7 months) and every week she is ill with what the GP describes as a virus. When I say every week, I am not exagurating! She is usually grumpy, runny nosed, and covered in a bit of a rash on her forehead/ears and trunk. She frequently runs a low grade fever. We see the doctor frequently and he just says she is having a run of illness, which she may well be I guess - she is only a baby after all! However, I do wonder if there is something underlying. Could this be a virus that she's finding it hard to fight and if so, is there anything I can do beyond the obvious? Or could it be that she's picking bugs up all the time. She's not gaining weight anymore and I'm starting to wonder if I could ask for some tests?

Has she just stated nursery or has your older one just started school so although not getting bugs herself could carry them and pass them on. Also when did you start weaning? It could be she has a mild intollerance. I'd definately ask for a 2nd opinion.

Hi, My DD went through a phase of this which lasted several months, I was so worried but now she is 2 she seems to get them less ofter (touch wood).

DD continued to put weight on though so maybe have a word with HV?

Does she eat/drink alot?

When my second ds was 7 months she was ill evry other week for about 4 mths - like you I also worried if there was anything underlying - but as doc said just virus - good for building immunity!! We spent a few evening in a and e after Dd had febril convulsions - again more virus diagnosis! Try not to worry Hope it passes soon!!

Oh thanks, in my heart I think she's just picking up everything going and will be fine in a few months. But I'm going back to work in 4 weeks and will really struggle to make it in if she's like this all the time. They won;t take her at nursery, and nor would I be keen on putting her in! I'll just have to hope it passes soon.

Oh, by the way, we have diarrhoea this evening, accompanied by another rash.

Here we go again....
