and how did you cope? DD2 is 17 mths and has been vomiting since sat lunch time, temp at night and diorrhea since sat eve.

Seen a Dr twice now to check hydration as everything shes drank she's eventually thrown up. any food (which is almost none) also thrown up.

i am a mess as i cannot bear to see the suffering and weight loss.

started syringing water yesterday eve and this morning she had 4 oz milk but still miserable so had 3 or 4 cheerios (literally).

this is day 3 and she hasn't vomited for 12 hours although started like that yesterday today then vomited 5 times throughout the day.

what next. water / milk (she wont take dirolyte),,,,she is also very clingy and upset.

My 7 month old vomited copiously for day, then didn't keep much down the next. Day 3 and 4 he drank milk and turned away from food, day 5 he started eating bits again but not a lot, day 6 he looked more cheerful and day 7 he was ravenous and the diarrhoea finally stopped.

It's a horrid, horrid bug, but she will be able to give you an indication of what she needs by what she will take. Don't force food in, wait until she wants it and keep offering water and milk as much as she is willing to try.

It's horrible to watch but lovely when you see them wolf something down again. Won't be long now I'm sure.

The vomiting stage (without eating) should pass quickly but the inability to keep food down can last up to 7 days.

The general advice when children are ill is to give them whatever they are prepared to take. The most digestible nutrition is sugar so, if not dioralyte, how about ribena or dilute fruit juice? Even if they vomit a while after, most of the fluids and some of the nutrition will have been digested. After sugar comes slightly more complex carbs such as fruit and plain pasta.

As long as there is no dehydration and your daughter is taking fluids, I would not worry overly until after a week. Normally, they do play catch up and it is a lovely feeling to suddenly feel hungry again and enjoy one's food.

We had liquid where he could see it and just offered it when he woke up and then probably every half an hour or so. If your DD is 17 months then I'd just say put it where she can see it and ask her now and then if she wants a drink. Sipping every now and then will be absorbed easier than glutting when she's really thirsty.

As for how I coped. I had a lot of help but also relied on the mantra "This too shall pass". It helped.

How and when to introduce food and what food? I feel totally clueless. Do I offer if no vomiting now. Will this make her vomit. It's been 14 hours since last bout. I am putting her for nap. This morning she's had 4oz milk since waking. Then 5 oz water sipped every 15 min and one mini cheddar and a few cherrios. Both of these she doesn't normally eat and wasn't too keen really but only dry food I could think of.

Try a piece of toast. Dd2 had it just before x-mas and was vomiting for 3 days (couldn't keep fluids down). If she can now keep fluids down and is asking for food then give it a try (small amounts at a time). Once dd started eating again she wouldn't stop and recovered quite quickly. Hope she feels better soon xx

We went with toast, weetabix, porridge, pasta. Plain carbohydrate really.
