DS 3.5 has a bad cough - doctor / medicine?

My parents have been saying that the GP will cure it. As far as I know it isn't a chest infection, he isn't bringing up any mucous and he is fine in himself, no temperature or listlessness.

Should I take him or get something from over the counter do you think? I haven't bothered because I thought that the active ingredient in cough mixtures is no longer considered suitable for children.

I spoke to a pharmacist today as my DD has a chesty cough which she gets every winter it's only bad at night. He said the new regulations are that he cant give cough linctus children under 6 years of age

You could try a mixture of lemon and honey hot drink which often helps with coughs.
