Antihistamine- 6 month old baby

The GP has just prescribed this but on the label it states it's not suitable for babies under 1 yr. DS is 6 months, but small, she's prescribed a half dose as he's 6 months but I feel wary of it after seeing the label. He's only tiny, she didn't ask his weight. I'm sure she knows what she's doing, I just need some reassurance.

Has anyone use used them for babies (it's boots allergy relief)

What is the active ingrediant and in how many mls and I will look it up for you

2.5 ml Chlorphenamine Maleate 2mg/5ml

Licensed use syrup not licensed for use in children under 1 year;

Symptomatic relief of allergy such as hay fever, urticaria
?By mouth
Child 1 month?2 years 1 mg twice daily

Sedating antihistamines should not be given to children under 2 years, except on specialist advice, because the safety of such use has not been established

Medicines are given 'off license' by a registered practitioner (dr) It looks like the GP has prescribed the right dose. - 1 mg twice a day. I cant find anywhere that says its weight related. Its all to do with the licensing - bit complicated!

Drowsiness is the main side effect.

Was slightly wary as she told me I could buy medised for him OTC.

Medised is NOT for children under 6!!

I knew that about medised so was rather surprised by her advice. She said' you could just give him medised to help him sleep at night, you can buy it otc'. I was surprised.

By the way I'm not normally a drug 'em to sleep type. DS has had a nasty cough for months now, despite anitbiotics and is so sleep-deprived he's pale and purple-eyed from it. She said it would open the airways/ dry him up a bit to give him some peace. He's rather underweight and struggles to shake bugs. Decided a weeks sleep may help him. He looked like he had scales this morning he'd wiped so much snot over his face in the night.

He's also soya/ dairy allergic so part of me is wondering if the 'cold' isn't a cold but allergies.

DD 4mo was prescribed antihistamines last week, the bottle said not for under ones, phoned nhs 24, their pharmacist said it is not licensed for over the counter sale for under ones, but is fine on prescription in the lower dose. DD has been fine, not noticeably drowsy.

DS has passed out pretty much immediately (after a 15 min bounce), most peaceful looking sleep he's had in a month. No gagging from phlegm or nose snorting, really seems to have dried him up.

Do sympathise strawberry. My poor DD and her DH have not had a full nights sleep in 2 years because of DGS! He has just been prescribed phenergan which DD gave at the tiniest half dose and is slowly upping it to what was prescribed. He can still fight it though. Know exactly what you mean about drugging children doesnt feel right but its a last resort. She may try the one youve got instead - mind you phenergan wipes me out so dont know how he fights it! I've got chronic rhinitis (unknown cause) and take anti histimine every day so maybe something in DS snuffly ness. Mind you coughs and colds linger forever at this age. Theyre a mystery sometimes

It's silly but at this age you worry don't you, I was fearing early signs of asthma. He's got exzcema/ allergies so not completely neurotic (I tell myself).

His naps so far have been spectacular, plus he slept through the night. He's a sunny little man again in between. Back to being the world's happiest baby.
