When they're ill, how long do you sit it out before seeing the GP?

DS (3 yo) had his boosters on Thursday. Spiked a fever overnight, started coughing on the Friday, and is now coughing until he's nearly sick several times a day, exhausted and not eating. He's never been inappetant before now. He's getting Calpol and Calprofen, although the fever's settled he's still obviously suffering. GP tomorrow or give it a wee while longer?

I'd go see the GP tomorrow. If you phone NHS Direct they are likely to say (and this is not intended as a criticism but rather I think it is the right question to ask): "as his mum, how serious do you feel it is?" Go with your feeling on it.

How is he otherwise (other than the cough I mean)

From what you've said, I'd take him to the GP on Monday.

GP. Definitely. I am not one for running to them, but my dd (2) had similar symptoms a couple of weeks ago. I waited through weekend and then went to see doc on the Mon. And she had a chest infection. Poor thing. I think doc thought I was an over protective mother, he even said he was surprised she had an infection (which was mild pneumonia). Coughing was due to finding it hard to breathe (dry cough). She was fine on antibiotics, but took nearly a week to be back to normal so was quite bad.

He's better than he was on Friday afternoon, but still a long way from himself - lethargic, tearful. But part of me thinks that's just lack of sleep and lack of food. And it is probably viral so they won't be able to do anything. I just thought it would pass more quickly I guess.

Ah he does also have a runny nose as of today so hopefully not a chest infection, but a horrible wheezy barking cough.

I think unless much better tomorrow I'll take him up. We've bloody lived in there recently! (DD still quite new)

Wheezy cough not good. I should have listened to dh who has asthma and said she sounded asthmatic, guess she was in a way.

It's all about instincts.

DD has had a barking, dry, rattly cough for nearly a fortnight (is on its way out slowly but surely) that started with lethargy, temp, tears, unhappiness etc.

But I absolutely knew it was a virus. I know her. I wasn't worried at any point. And the entire family has had it too and I felt lethargic and tearful and off my food too so knew it was just a bug.

If you are worried then that's the thing to listen to.
