Agh urgent help - think it's glue on ds back how do I get it off

OK 0 day from hell -ds at reception comes home talking to noone - but I note he has a temperature and I put it down to him coming down with flu.

Just stripped him for bath - looks like glue on his back. He's going bonkers - how do I take it off? I've rubbed with baby oil - nothing.

Any ideas pronto - he's so scared.

No idea how's he's got it as he won't say - but as he's in reception I'm assuming it's not superglue.

Should I also point this out to his teachers on Monday?

I'd be surprised if superglue was available in reception.
Leave it until it wears off naturally if it is not a huge amount.

but there's quite a bit - and it's not a think strip if you know what I mean - it's really lumpy and therefore uncomfortable.

The warm water of the bath should help. Encourage him to lie back in it to soak for a few minutes if possible. If he's not into that then soak a flannel and leave it over the glue for a couple of minutes - keep it warm by pouring more water over it.

Once out and he's dry if it hasn't shifted put lots of thick moisturiser on around it (ideally face cream) it'll keep the skin moist.

Are you sure it happened at school - I just wondered if its not on his clothes why he didn't have them on.

Nail varnish remover may break it down....can you dab at it with cotton wool?

Yup - my questions exactly. he had his first swimming lesson there today but I'd have guessed he'd have got dressed before going back to class.

He came home very upset and not talking. Apparently he'd been crying all afternoon at school. I assumed it's because he'd been nervous about his first swim class there but he said it was fine. Plus I've just checked and he seems to be coming up with a temperature and a cold so assumed he was feeling a low. Also I notice he came back minus his vest.

Yep - I'm going to ask the school on Monday.

I've just checked the jumper and there's nothing on that so the glue must have been put directly onto his skin.

He's going bonkers now and he's been in the bath for ages - I'll have another shot at this tomorrow. In the meantime just moisturise. And go find my varnish remover!

I'd phone NHS direct....this could be an allergic reaction. Are you sure it is a substance and he hasn't been burnt?

if it was pva glue he would have had to be naked for ages for it to dry.
it would also peel off easily.

I think any glue that any children that age could get hold of in school would be fairly easily water soluble. Which makes me think it isn't glue. If it could be a skin problem, and if he also has a temperature I think I'd call NHS direct in case it's all connected.

Has he said that anything happened at school?,or that another child put something on him? I wouldn't be putting stuff on it until you are sure what it is.

PVA glue would just rub off (DS2 once got it all over himself ). I think you should take him to OOH, it sounds like something has irritated his skin.

And why would he just have an allergic reaction purely in a patch on his back?

I agree, this dosen't sound right, PVA glue that they have in reception usually just kind of rubs off skin.

Have you tried rubbing a bit, what happened? Does it hurt him?

Have you managed to get anything out of him regarding what actually happened.

Hopefully he's ok and sleeping now, it dosen't sound like a good day whatever happened.

How is he now? I also didn't think it sounded like glue. I would ring ooh. I hope you get it sorted.

What i meant was how can something have got on his back (and nowhere else) to cause a reaction whilst at school?

Quick update:

I did call nhs direct - they're saying go with the oil and sudsy water and to cover it with a dressing soaked in oil. The temperature is a touch of flu and it's back down. He's happy enough unless you try and deal with his sticky back (meh).

Also I clearly didn't engage my brain last night. After bath I did put him in a light cotton pj top as the jumper hadn't stuck so I assumed the top wouldn't - I was wrong - I now have a top stuck to his back! Agh - NHS direct say just keeping doing the baths and the oils and if no improvement iun a few days take him to see a nurse.

Last night he fessed up - basically lack of vest is because he's rubbish at dressing (after his first swim lesson) and so he stuffed it in his bag and just put on his jumper. His friend did this sticky stuff later in the class as a joke. The teacher saw and told him off. Gotta say it would have been helpful if they'd checked his back as they did see this (according to ds) and wipe it off while still new and wipeable. I could be because they are not allowed to touch the kids - but I'm going to have a quick word on Monday.

I'm fascinated what on earth they had in a reception classroom that would a) not wash off and b) cause fabric to stick to his back?!

Oh guys - my mum came, conquered and left - ie she got it off. I managed to get the top away with lots of oil (cue running around the room after him) - then we covered him in oil and dressed him and took him to the park for a bit of fun and then my mum worked her magic with a loofa I think (his back is a bit red). I'm not saying a word as I'm just relieved.

Will have a word with teachers on the Monday as ds adamant that a member of staff saw the entire thing. I know they are not meant to touch but surely the application of glue is not about touching and more about 'first aid' ie getting it off.

I'm going to ask what it was and update you all - perhaps their kiddy glue is stronger than they think.
