DD has had a cold/cough since Tuesday. Fever has gone but she now has such a painful cough she can't sleep for any more than 90 seconds or so before waking again, screaming and coughing. She can't be comforted with anything. She is desperately overtired and needs to sleep, Disprol isn't even touching the sides... It's been 3 days now and getting worse.

Is there any medicine with a sedative in it that is safe/available to buy for toddlers? She is 22 months.

My sister dd would not take any calpol or nurofen she wouold just throw it back up how ever you gave it to her ( she is now 4 and is better) The gp once told her to get the calpol melts they are for six plus but if you work the dose out its ok. Ihink she used to have 1/2 a tablet when she was your dd age. You can work out the same dose as normal calpol from the bottle and box. My DS used to get tonsilites every other week before he had them out and they were a god send. Frozen frubes used to really help him as well. I got told after his opp to give nurofen then wait two hours and give calpol so they never get in pain ( In theory). Hope you get some sleep.

I'll have to try that blow on the face trick, I can normally get the nurofen syringe in but then she spits it out and then gets in suck a state she gags and throws up the rest.

Well she's in bed now, after a quick bath, dose of disprol and some vicks on her feet. Have put a bowl of water near her radiator with a few drops of lavender and eucalyptus. I can hear her coughing occasionally but she seems to be settled and is not crying, for the first time in 15 hours. She wouldn't drink her bedtime milk but has had a reasonable amount of fluid this afternoon.

Sling is a good idea. We still have our kari me wrap sling which is awesome even for a hefty toddler. Can't wait to use it again for DC2. I'd carry her in it myself but bump is a bit big now so DH will have to do the carrying!

Is a frozen frube like those long ice lolly things in a plastic wrap we used to get when we were kids? Can't remember the name. Sounds like the sort of thing DD might like though!

My mum used to put vicks on my feet. It works!

A Frube is a tube of fromage frais(sp) which you can put in the frezzer. But i would of thought that the ice pops would do the same thing, just when ds was not eating at least i could get something in him.

Crazycatlady · 23/10/2010 19:33

Oh I see! DD loves fromage frais. Will seek them out tomorrow, thanks.

Also, although dc don't like it when you do it, you can buy Sterimar nose spray (much easier to dose than saline drops I found) and it clears nose (temporarily) thus reducing mucus build up in throat. We also find humidifier helpful, especially when central heating is on and when the coughing starts distraction, distraction, distraction. Last night we had episodes every 2-3 hours and I have listened to audio CDs almost the whole night but seems to calm dd down. It must be such a nasty virus what is going round. Hope all our kids get better soon!

Just to say, dairy products can aggravate coughs/ sore throats. I'd stick with the ice pops/lollies.
Might be worth someone nipping out to the late shop this eve ready for the inevitable wake-ups!

It is a horrid virus this one! Thankfully DD's cough has started to loosen and is far less sore for her now I think. After a very early bed last night (6.20) she slept until 6.30 this morning. I heard her cough a bit in the night but nothing that woke her properly.

A bit happier today, still not much of an appetite but she managed a few chocolate wafers in Caffe Nero just now with her soy babycino Hmm and has had some apple slices and toast.

Now napping. Hoping she's on the mend.

DH is taking all the credit for her sleeping all night having done the warm bath and disprol, and I'm taking all the credit for the vicks on the feet Grin.
