Can anyone tell me what this is?

DD has what looks like a hole just above her anus, but obviously it doesn't go anywhere. I noticed it when she was born, and the MW or paediatrician mentioned it too (I think they said a "pronounced..." something, but not to worry as it was closed off). In my post childbirth haze I didn't think to ask questions but I want to know what it is! Will it vanish as she grows or will she have it for the rest of her life? How common is it? Will it mean she's more susceptible to infection?

Basically if she has no pain and can walk, it's mild. As I understand it.

SPB, get a GP appointment. It's obviously bothering you, and the HV won't be able to tell you much. At least if you hear from a doctor that she'll be OK you'll stop stressing about it, and it is what they are there for.

Take care, try not to worry. :)

DD has one of these, it's quite obvious if you look. It's a little dimple above her buttocks and it's difficult (though not impossible) to see that it's closed up at the bottom. I asked about when she was about 2 months old, and it's nothing to worry about - it's very common, and will have no impact on her whatsoever. She's almost certainly never going to have any issue with it at all. A GP can take a quick look for you if you want reassurance!
