Books suitable for 11 yr old girl

My dd turns 11 In a few weeks and I am hoping to get her some books for her bday.she quite likes cathy cassidy and has also read most of the jacqueline Wilson ones.I am not sure what other books are suitable for her age group thanks in advance.

Has she read Eva Ibbotson- journey to the river seas,dragonfly pool?

How about a couple of classics if she hasn't read them already - Charlotte Sometimes/Daddy Long Legs/Tom's Midnight Garden/Goodnight Mr Tom are all gorgeous.

Try any of the two series by Liz Kessler
"Pig City" by Louis Sachar
"Genie Us" by Steve Cole and Linda Chapman
anything by Jean Ure
"Saffy's Angel" by Hilary McKay
These are all books with the same "real life" feel as Jacqueline Wilson

"Girl Missing" by Sophie McKenzie is a very popular read as well with tweens.

Oh yes - my dds both liked Saffy's Angel and Girl Missing - but the latter is quite dark.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid books are v popular at the moment. Funny, a light read.

Cloud busting by Malorie Blackman is good, thoughtful, written in various styles of poetry so another quick but interesting read.

And I keep recommending frank cottrell boyce Cosmic and Framed these days as they are pacy, funny, great plots, ideal for an 11 yr old.

Cathy MacPhail is good, pacy, gritty social realism stuff (without being too gritty obv). Sorta similar to some of Wilson's. Missing is an exciting thriller. Run Zan Run.

Possibly the Georgia Nicolson series, might be a bit old but my DDs read them aged 11 upwards and laughed for weeks. First one is called 'Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging' but it's really not as bad as it sounds, it's a diary series by a young teenage girl. You could get it from the library to read first and see what you think though. Think there's about 7/8 books in the series.

More sensible suggestions:
'Sabriel', 'Lirael' and 'Abhorsen' are a very good fantasy trilogy by Garth Nix
Wind on Fire trilogy by William Nicholson
My DDs also loved Debbi Gliori, can't remember any titles though sorry.
Books like the Secret Garden, Little Princess, Heidi, Railway Children are always nice.
Harry Potter if she hasn't read them already.

I made my dds wait until age 12 for the Georgia Nicholson books, as they do get a little bit risque - they are hilarious though, especially the first couple.

Skellig, Heaven eyes, The Fire eaters by David Almond all v good.

Private Peaceful and Adolphus Tips by Michael Murpurgo good too. Some of his are quite irritating and worthy though.

Yes the Wind Singer trilogy is excellent - but I hated Sabriel.

She might like the Ingo series by Helen Dunmore. I also second Eva Ibbotsen, and I think there are some on offer at Bookpeople at the moment.

I don't censor, but my DD (just 11) has loved the Twilight series and also enjoyed the Georgia Nicolson books, as well as the Louis Sachar books mentioned above.

Oh yes - dd2 liked the Twilight books aged 12. Again, I'd be a bit cautious of giving them to an 11 year old but having said that, dd1 devoured the Across The Nightingale Floor series agaed 10 or 11 and there is loads of sex in that, so I am clearly just a hypocrite. I guess that has historical stuff too though (thus educational!), whereas Twilight is about nowt but sex - and hideously badly written to boot.

Can't find them, sorry, but there is some good stuff on there at the moment. My 12 year old DD loved this recently. If she likes Cathy Cassidy she will probably also like Cathy Hopkins or Jean Ure
Celia Rees is very good.

ugh janeite, I agree. A lot of morpurgo gets on my nerves. It can be quite dull and so many children are made to read it at school. I like Mr Nobody's Eyes.

I LOVED When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit when I was about her age.

Oh yes, I second Celia Rees, great author.

Slightly more old-fashioned, but I loved K.M. Peyton's Flambards books at that age.

Which is probably why I agree with janeite about the Garth Nix books - horrible (unless your DD is a goth).

It is also an age where they might be able to start on light adult classics. Dd read Pride and Prejudice and enjoyed it.
