historical fiction suggestions?

After 2 years of torturous fairy books dd finally seems open to the idea of moving away from fairies (big sigh of relief!).
She read one of Terry Deary's Roman Tales the other day & seems very interested in the idea of reading books set in different times. Am considering Percy Jackson as one idea to try (although I have no experience of them), but just wondered if anyone had any other recommendations. A difficult genre to source as most are just dumped in with childrens fiction in libraries & bookshops!
Also considering an 'ology' book, maybe egyptology or wizardology. Are they any good? DD is 8 by the way, but very good at reading.

Some Rosemary Sutcliffe? Her Roman books are very good. Also Geoffrey Trease and Henry Treece are brilliant but a bit hard to find sometimes.

Caroline Lawrence's Roman Mysteries - although like Harry Potter, the series darkens as it progresses, so the later books might have to wait

Not a fiction book as such, but one that both my dcs have liked is Geraldine McCaughrean's Britannia - Tales from Our History. Some are a bit bloodthirsty, but all the old favourites like Grace Darling, King Alfred burning the cakes, King Charles hiding in the oak tree after the Battle of Worcester etc, Gog and Magog, Dick Whittington. Fantastic portmanteau story book. A similar one on Greek myths is Atticus the Storyteller.

My dd is seven and a good reader and has been gripped by the Usborne History Encyclopedia volumes, which give social history as well and cover different periods.

Also, try her on A Little Princess and The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, Five Children and It/The Treasure Seekers by Edith Nesbit, and The Family from One End Street by Eve Garnett. These were not historical fiction when they were written, but are now, and present a way of life so different to ours that children love to chat about what has changed. HTH

A good series about Egyptian times are The Egyptian Chronicles by Gill Harvey. They are a great pre-curser to the Roman Mysteries as they are not so dark and not so thick!!!

Surprised that no-one has mentioned the "History Spies" series by Jo Foster; there are four of them, set in Ancient Egypt, Rome, Victorian times and the blitz. DD1 read them when she was 8 and loved them, I'm sure you could get them cheap as a set from Amazon.

How old is she?

I've always loved historical fiction but don't know how many of the books I loved are actually in print - a lot can be bought from Amazon or abebooks traders though..
