Can anyone recommend any books to read to dd which don't feature a mummy who stays at home and a male main character having adventures? I'm really struggling to find any really nice child friendly books which don't support a stereotypical idea of gender roles.

I like Farmer Duck - Martin Waddell I think - has a lazy (male) farmer in it though.
Winnie the Witch? Other Korky Paul illustrated stories - usually animals.
Going on a bear hunt?

There was a thread a while back in the Feminism topic here with some good suggestions.

Thanks for the link Takver. There are loads of lovely suggestions on there. I find it a bit annoying that you have to actively search for good female characters in books though.

My ds loves the Maisy books and he makes up his own Maisy stories - like Maisy swimming and Maisy sailing and Maisy flying planes!
