For a 10 year old - Journey to the River Sea is great and The Secret of Platform 13. Also the ghost ones, forget what they are called.
The ones like The Secret Countess are aimed at a slightly older (12-15) reader as they are romances. My 12 year old DD loves them, but my almost 10 year old is not interested yet.

MitchyInge · 10/01/2010 20:44

my 10yo loved the one about the river - the orphan that goes to live somewhere Amazonian

and the one about the Russian countess who ends up being a servant

we've got company of swans but don't think it's been read yet, might be for older readers, not sure

RatherBeOnThePiste · 10/01/2010 20:48

another vote for Journey to the River Sea

she also loved Star of Kazan

and Company of Swans.. this one is poss for bit older as its a love story / historical romance, depends on what she likes

Thanks for your replies - will order Journey to the River Sea as a starter

DD is 9.5 and enjoying The Dragonfly Pool.

notanidea · 11/01/2010 11:26

My DD read the star of kazan, journey to the river sea and the dragon fly pool when she was 8. She wanted to go to the same school as the girl goes in the dragonfly pool.

bruffin · 11/01/2010 11:32

My DD 12 only just discovered Eva Ibbotson and adored the Dragonfly Pool.

I have bought her a few new ones for christmas but can't remember which ones.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 11/01/2010 11:46

Ah she is a great writer! I still enjoy her stuff now in fact, it's a great comfort read.

I had Which Witch? when i was about 10 and loved it, it's very funny and not too long with a solid storyline.

If she's quite robust then might be ready for The Song of Summer - but it is all about nazis etc so might be better to wait til she's a bit older.

Love the Secret Countess too.

DD 10 Also loved Dragonfly Pool - so did I actually .

notanidea - i know someone who went to the real school. Apparently it was a lovely as it was in the book.

notanidea · 14/01/2010 09:42

I shall tell her that.Which part of the country is the school (is it Dartington or am I just making this up).If we happen to visit that part maybe I will take her to visit.

Wizofthewiz · 14/01/2010 09:54

It was Dartington but has moved and is now called Sands - I think. It is in Ashburton Devon now, still has the same ethos.

Lovely place for a holiday !

Dartington is used for other things now - they do music residential workshops in the summer amongst other stuff.

We love them all, especially Journey to the River Sea, Dragonfly Pool and The Star of Kazan. My 11yo wrote to Ms. Ibbotson and receive a lovely letter back, several pages long about the sadness of her husband's death and the impact it had on her writing. Lovely.
