the most overrated childrens books

two thomas tank books have somehow made their way into our house. pre-kids i really had no idea just how shite they are. even the bloody drawings are awful. why does my otherwise discerning dd love them so much?

and that feckin beatrix potter? were there no other kids books published at the time thus they achieved popularity simply by existing? seeing as there are loads and loads of kids books now, surely publishers can just write BP off as a unseemly blot on the otherwise wonderful world of childrens books

Nah, piprabbit,..can't have that - they are different colours are they not??

piprabbit · 10/03/2010 01:47

Hmmm, I will give you that LittlePushka, and I suppose they all have different names too.
I'm waiting for the stationery series in which Paulette the Paper Clip fairy and her friends Rhodda the Ruler fairy and Enda the Eraser fairy have a series of exciting adventures attempting to retrieve magical items stolen from the staionery cupboard by the goblins.

I find it quite upsetting that the fox hound puppies eat all her eggs! they're supposed to be on her side, a little too realistic at that point IMO

MiraMoreVino · 10/03/2010 20:49

Blimey, those pesky Mr Men (ad Little Misses) aren't very popular, are they? Glad I'm not the only one who feels like setting fire to Mr Noisy and his whole boring, sexist little world

The Tiger Who Came To Tea does my head in.

And that revolting book about the mole who does a poo. FFS!

I am about what people think of Thomas. I love Thomas , both DS and DD do as well.

Anyway, those guess how much I love you books - I couldn't bring myself to open them, they looked so pukey.

I ususally send books I don't like straight to the charity shop.

Books that I don't like much are put virtually out of view so that they always choose something I like to read.

Klio · 10/03/2010 21:06

I cannot stand the new (square shaped) Thomas books as they are just so terrible, but I absolutely love the original Awdry Railway Stories books and ds (4) has these stories nearly every night. That and anything by Lynley Dodd, I just love her use of language

I tend to find that books that I loved as a kid are the ones that are most loved in our house, there is just sooooo much drivel out there.

Anything in the Tiara Club Series - truly, truly awful.

I give you the Barenstein Bears.

Who decided to publish the Rainbow Fairies? I mean ok to write it but who read it and decided: yes, let's bring it out? OMG I so hate those books, truly loathe them

Melbliss - the right place for this us the Classifieds section where you pay to place a small business ad.

Always remember that if there is a book you particularly loathe and hate reading aloud then that is the one your three-year-old will want to have read to her ten times a day. This is why I never allowed Mr Men books into the house.

I like the Mr Men books. They were hugely popular with the younger members of the family.

Mind you, so was Horrid Henry. I hate those books. They're like a poor version of the lovely William books.
