Recommended books for 14 year old boy?

I tend to choose his books as he can't be bothered going to the library and would just read NME if I left him to it.

Two books he's recently read which he thought were brilliant are Junk by Melvyn Burgess and Slam by Nick Hornby.

at least nme's reading....

try him with Gone by Michael Grant, Black Tattoo by sam Enthoven for a start....

He absolutely loved all the Cherub books but for some reason he didn't finish the last one which I think was set in the second world war. Maybe I'm getting confused and it was a different series by the same author?

DS will be 14 next month and has only been reading novels for the last year except for Harry Potter which he started when he was 9

Is your library on line. DS won't go to the library to actually look for books but usually orders them on the Herts library website and just pops into the library to pick it up.

I think you are talking about the Henderson Boys which are written by the author of Cherub but a different series.

Now that he's read Junk, which is about heroin addition and sounds quite an adult book to me, he's asked me if he can read Trainspotting.

I've said no as I think it would be totally unsuitable for a 14 year old boy, not that I've read it myself.

I just asked DS1 (15) what he would recomment. He recommends the Aragorn series, the Twilight series (yes marketed at girls, but he has read them all), The Curious Incidence of the Dog at Night-time and authors like Terry Pratchett, Garth Nix. He is heavily into Jim Butcher at the moment - he writes about a wizard PI in Chicago, although I think his books are in the adult section of the library rather than the teenage section.

Re Trainspotting, we have a complete non-censorship policy here. My feeling is that as long as he is reading I don't mind what it is - magazines, books, whatever, but it is up to you.
