Recommendation for reading books for 6yr old boy.

My son is on level 7 ORT at school, while at home we have read the complete set of Jelly and Bean (which he loved). I am looking for reading books for him to supplement the 2 books he gets a week from school, any recommendations? Many thanks

DD1 and DS2 loved A Series of Unfortunate Events at that age. They're pretty advanced readers.

DS3, who's more average I would say, loved Captain Underpants followed by the BeastQuest books. I was never a big fan of the BQ books but really can't knock them as they helped him become an avid reader and he demanded the next in the series, then the next etc. He also enjoys the Mr. Gum books.

I've no idea what ORT stage 7 equates to (we're spared non-stop Biff et al at my dc's primary - phew), but assuming he's ready for simple chapter books have you tried Jeremy Strong (on offer at book people), there's another series on there Agent something or other which ds2 liked at that age - also Eoin Colfer's written a couple especially for younger readers "The legend of ...."

and don't rule out non-fiction - both my boys devoured "information books" as they called them long before they were ready for complex narratives - there's loads of DK and Usborne titles which are great

Thanks for all those suggestions. I haven't heard of A Series of Unfortunate Events so will look into that, as well as The Legend of .... and emil and the detectives. We have just been to see Jeremy Strong give a talk/plug his latest book and have read a few of his (from the book club).
I guess I am a bit wary of moving from a reading scheme (Jelly and Bean) which gave him confidence to the real thing!!!

Would second the Beast Quest recommendation - DS had the first one for his sixth birthday and has just devoured them. Interestingly, he was reluctant to branch out from the safety of the reading schemes at first but this series so appealed to him that he's leapt on in his reading since discovering them.

Magic Tree House - adventures of 2 kids who go time travelling so back to time of Eygptians, swimming with dolphins, dodging Vesuvius as it erupts. Our son literally ate them all up.

The Mr. Gum series by Andy Stanton.

My DS absolutely loves them and is often in stitches reading them, and the books are very funny.

Easy enough to read too.

I bought ds (6yo) a book in Tesco for £1.00 with a Mr Gum story on one side and a Beast Quest story on the other. He loves Mr Gum and Roahl Dahl and so this will give him his first taste at Beast Quest.

If he needs encouragement in reading I would thoroughly recommend the Dirty Bertie series of books. They really made my DS 'get the reading bug'. I like them better than the Horrid Henry stuff - proper stories. And for boys, with titles like Poo, Worms, Pants and Fleas you can't really go wrong!

DS2 loves the Dinosaur Cove books. Also the Jiggy McCue series - starts with 'The Poltergoose'.

My kids love the Bayard Box books. If your little boy is 7 I would recommend the Adventurebox ones, as these are aimed at 6-9 yr olds. www.adventureboxbooks.com/ They are really interactive (hence the kids loving them) but in line with the curriculum so help support your child?s development with Tom and Lili. I think reading these days needs to be interactive and engaging as it will encourage
learning in a fun way. Hope thats a help x
