What self reader style books could you recommend for my DD? (Non princess, fairy)

DD 6 yrs is just about there in terms of reading by herself and I wanted to buy her some books for home. Are there any series you would recommend that we could try and maybe start collecting?

why the non princess or fairy?

what is she interested in? I'd go from there. If kids are interested in a theme it's probably better to go with it than get something you like

The Mr Gum books by Andy Stanton go down very well with my DD7, as does Horrid Henry.

Because she's not really interested in them. She has alot of books about princesses etc as that seems to be what people have bought her in the past. She told me the other day that she was bored of them.

She does like Horrid Henry though Snorbs and I will look into the Mr Gum books. Thanks!

In terms of old classics the Secret Seven books by Enid Blyton are fantastic easy readers (if you can stand the sexism), my dd also loves the Famous Five and Adventurous Four books.

Also (for a slightly younger audience maybe but dd is now 7 & still likes them) EB's Magic Faraway Tree and Wishing Chair stories.

Quite a lot of the shorter Roald Dahl books might appeal (Fantastic Mr Fox & the Twits)?

My dd also likes non-fiction - she is animal mad & also very keen on space rockets so anything on that lines goes down well, & they're often easy to find in charity shops.

I remember we have also had Pirate School books from the library but didn't look at them closely to see the author.

Ottoline and the Yellow Cat, Ottoline goes to School - we have the first one, and DS1 loves it, and I hear the second is as good.

We like Astrosaurs and Cows In Action, which have decent female characters.

McDreamy - the 'Beginners' range is very good, all non-fiction and a wide range of subjects such as Bears, Bugs, Cats, China, Planet Earth etc etc. Also the Young Readers come in fiction and non-fiction, too.

How about the Beano books? Similar age to Horrid Henry - the Dennis the Menace books are very popular.

Oh, and Jeremy Strong's books are hilarious, DS loves the My Brother's Famous Bottom series.

Anything by Dick King Smith. There was a set of them on the book people a while ago, I think.

Also The Worst Witch.

...and Asterix.

Winnie the Witch chapter books are fun - again loads of pictures along with the text. Maybe more ones to get from the library though as they are rather short (about the length of a rainbow magic book or possibly even shorter).

We love Ottoline as others have mentioned. Also The Magic Tree House series are good. The Worst Witch as well.
