can anyone help me track down a children's book set in the Fens?

I remember it had a spooky log in it and many references to King John's lost treasure - it was very scary at the time. I'd love to re-read/share with my 9yo.

Does it ring any bells for anyone? Googling the various bits I remember has been fruitless

I thought your book sounded reminiscent of Alan Garner, although not one of his, so thought Google might bring up a book site which linked them. I googled 'Alan Garner' along with some of your keywords and came up with exactly the same site you did! It sounds an interesting book, and I enjoy M.R. James too, so I will try to find a copy.
