Book ideas for 5 year old girl

Does anyone have a daughter of 5-ish?

My dd loves having a 'girl's story' read to her at night after her little brothers have gone to bed. She's in reception and starting to read independently, but we both still enjoy having a story read out loud, so it doesn't matter whether it's a picture book or something more substantial with chapters.

She's quite keen on those Rainbow Magic books by Daisy Meadows, but I really want to introduce her to other books: preferably ones that are better-written, or at least, written by a real person rather than by committee!

Any suggestions gratefully received

Princess Poppy? There's a good gift set on The Book People. My 4yr 10 mth daughter loves them.

Charlotte's Web is a lovely one for reading outloud - also Stuart Little (same author)

dd loved the Sophie books by Dick King-Smith last year. I managed to steer her away from the rainbow fairy type books, but did get persuaded into reading her the Secret Unicorn series and Unicorn School - pretty formulaic but a bit more substantial than rainbow fairies - she's now in Y1 and I'm reading her the Narnia books which she's really enjoying

Have you tried the Faraway Tree stories by Enid Blyton, absolutely dreadful to read aloud but dd1 loved them at this age.

she also likes the usborne puzzle series (puzzle island, puzzle castle etc)

and stories from the puffin book of stories for 8 year olds (we had for dd1 but she has loved these from 4 upwards especially A Necklace of Raindrops by Joan Aiken)

traditional fairy stories

and loads of the usborne books, Nutcrakcer, Snow Queen, Stories of Ponies etc

Mine like many of those traditional ladybird stories - gingerbread man, magic porridge pot, princess and frog, little red hen, chicken licken, rapunzel. They're quite good for 5yos, they're all in the early reader series so you can read them and then at some point they can read them.

DD1 is 4 1/2 and likes lots of those already mentioned (Blyton, Pippi Longstocking) and I am getting Milly Molly Mandy for Christmas. She also really likes Roald Dahl and we have just started Mary Poppins though I think it is a bit old for her really.

Eniddo! A necklace of raindrops is ringing some very far-off bells deep deep in my brain - can you remind me what it is for nostalgia's sake?

A Necklace of Raindrops

absolutely fab

about a little girl called Laura whose godfather is the North Wind. He gives her a necklace and adds a raindrop every birthday - each raindrop gives her a different weather controlling power

jealous girl at school steals the necklace and all the animals find it for Laura in Arabia

Laura travels to arabia where the necklace has been given to the Sheiks daughter as a birthday present (as well as a book that doesnt have a last page, a golden bird and a ship made from a pink shell [smile})

I could not get into the Milly Molly books AT ALL - they were so dreary to read outloud! ended up shlepping them to a charity shop

I agree, absolutely dreadful to read out loud. However, I am enjoying re-reading stories about your namesake RQ to my five year old dd!

Ramona I haven't seem you on here before! I loved the Ramona Quimby books as a child.

Well it's a fab name change My aunty bought me Ramona Quimby age 8 for my 8th Birthday and I loved it then read the rest. I always remember the bit when she got il and her teacher said that it was a nusaince and Ramona thought he was calling her a nusiance this has always made me careful about what I say to my children!

and I still can't spell nuisance!
