Recommendations for 5 year olds.

I am looking for some great recommendations for books for my five year old. She has enjoyed Julia Donaldson and has a lot of these, we also like the Mog series by Judith Kerr and Paddington.
We have read these over and over. Does anyone have any recommendations for the next stage of books for me to read to her?

Anything by Kes Gray. My 6 year old son finds them absolutely hilarious. Don't let the pigeon drive the bus and the one about the mouse in the house are brilliant. Also The Diddle That Dummed. The Daisy books are quite good too. We also like books by Jill Murphy and Oliver Jeffers too

Micheal Rosen and Jeremy Strong do some brilliant books. Winnie the Witch was a favourite of my daughter and they do picture books and also early reader ones. I would suggest taking her to a book shop and looking with her and getting her to pick something that she likes the look of- fact or fiction.

@elh1605 we live in Europe we will definitely go to a book shop next time we are in the UK but for now I am pretty out of touch with children’s books. It’s so good for my daughter’s vocabulary to read in English though which is why I want to keep it up.

My Big Shouting Day (Rebecca Patterson) Mighty Min (Melissa Castrilion), Alan’s Big Scary Teeth (Jarvis), What’s Next? (Timothy Knapman), The Book With no Pictures (BJ Novak) are all perennial faves in our house 🙂

The Oi books are great for starting to learn phonics and my dd found them hilarious. Also as above the book with no pictures got lots of laughs and so did the blue footed booby. We have a gorgeous picture book called the rainbow bear by michael murpargo and it's really good for increasing vocabulary. Roald Dahl books, naughtiest unicorn books and billy b brown and claude the dog books were great for introducing to chapter books

My dd enjoyed the Dr Seuss books, The Wishing Chair, Tales from Brambly Hedge, Katie Morag and the original Paddington Bear books

Some of my favourite books from 10 years teaching and 7 years parenting:

• Jon Klassen hat trilogy (We found a hat, I want my hat back, this is not my hat) - few words but with lots of humour behind the words so great for extra comprehension. Also - Sam and Dave Dig a Hole! One of my favourite books ever
• Hoot Owl: Master of Diguise (my daughter’s favourite book, absolutely hilarious and great for your daughter’s age)
• Bringing the rain to Kapiti Plain

Harriet Muncaster’s books are a big hit with my 5 year old - the Isadora Moon, Mirabelle and Emerald series They are gorgeous books and a good bridge between picture books and chapter books.

Rachel Bright & Jan Field - The Lion Inside, The Squirrels Who Squabbled etc.

Charlie & Lola series by Lauren Child

Clarice Bean series by Lauren Child

Dave the Unicorn by Pip Bird - there are a whole series of books. My 6 year old loved them as they are adventurous, and quite silly and funny, with plenty of illustrations but in a chapter book format.

Isadora Moon is also perfect for that age. Also Winnie the Witch as others have recommended. The Twits by Roald Dahl.

Bit old fashioned but Mr Men and Little Miss books.

Isadora Moon is a favorite here too, quite good chapter lengths to read one per night & there's about 20+ in the series plus the spin-offs!

As a PP said, the Isadora Moon and the associated series are popular with our five year old! And there are loads of them.

Mo Williams is brilliant- don't let the pigeon drive the bus and the other pigeon books. We got the (10?) book set, the pigeon doesn't want a bath/ to go to school etc. My 5 year old daughter laughs her head off, they are very fun.

We also love the Rachel Bright stories. The illustrations and rhymes are beautiful. The Lion Inside is the most famous, but I love the colours of the Gecko and the Echo and the Turtle who Turned the Tide.

Roald Dahl! Start with The Twists as it's shorter and then Charlie and the Chocolate factory, James and the Giant Peach, Matilda ect.
My little girl loves all of these, now we have the yoto cards she listens to them again and again!

@HotMummaSummer I loved Roald Dahl as a child I had the cassette tapes of all the stories like a 90s yoto haha
