Very specific DD request: books about very strict teachers

It's DD birthday in a couple of weeks and she will be 7. She has requested chapter books about very strict teachers. I've read Matilda and Worlds Worst Teachers to her so not either of those, and she's rejected my suggestion of the Worst Witch.

Any suggestions?

The Demon Headmaster?

Anne of Geen Gables turns into a strict but fair teacher.

Pistachiocake · 22/07/2026 20:44

Richmal Crompton, Enid Blyton, and I suppose Harry Potter has Snape.

Little Women, when poor Amy has her limes confiscated. But the Beth story may be too sad
Jane Eyre is probably far too much for her but the awful boarding school gave me nightmares for years when I was about 13.
The other recommended books are good.

Mallory Towers series by Enid Blyton. Some of the teachers are strict, some less so. I loved them and my daughter also did.

The demon headmaster has follow up books as well.

I suppose Danny champion of the world?

The Little Princess by Francis Hodgson Burnett.

Chalet school? There’s hundreds of them if she enjoys them.

I also thought of Danny, Champion of the World, but that's abusive rather than strict I think.

Thanks, some great suggestions! I'm wondering if some of these are a bit old for a just turned 7 year old? I loved Anne of Green Gables, Malory Towers and Chalet School but think I was older, have any younger DCs read these recently?

She's quite sensitive, so I was a little surprised by this request! So I think Little Women would be too much. And Demon Headmaster possibly too scary.

I can't remember much school stuff in Just William but will check it out!

What about The Wolves Of Willoughby Chase?

LadyEnemy · 22/07/2026 23:39

Naughtiest Girl in the school. This would be her age group I think.

Oh that's a good call!

Ballet Shoes - Noel Streatfield

I think the retired ballet teacher who gave lessons was strict.

Matilda!

“To be a Cat” by Matt Haig. My son loved this at around 8yo
