They were still selling them fairly recently. Well, 15 yrs ago. New versions. They were so cool, weren't they? I liked the Pirate ones too.

blog about this

muminCT · 19/06/2008 01:51

I had no idea they even did new versions, still the same stories just re-printed?

I know you can buy old ones on Amazon some are really cheap like 20p were the more popular hard to find ones can be very expensive.

My dd1 learned to read with them 3 years ago - Neither of us enjoyed them but they worked.

christywhisty · 19/06/2008 13:26

I had them at school back in the 60's and didn't mind them.

DS 12 also used them (they were really old and probably dated back to when I had them) and hated them, he used to hide them. Thankfully his teacher was very understanding and gave him some other books to read.

TheApprentice · 19/06/2008 13:32

I have used them to teach with, although not seen them for about 15 years! Although I didnt like them much, they do work, especially for kids who are struggling with other reading schemes.

Illustrations are awful!

tigermeow · 19/06/2008 15:51

I learnt to read with Roger et al! I had forgetten about them until I did some supply at a school that still used them. I think that they were an excellent scheme, a very gentle intorduction to the 'key' words.
The school I saw them updated their scheme...to ORT and binned the lot...guess who was fishing around in the skip that day. I now have the first 3 levels here!

totally remember Roger Red Hat and Billy Blue Hat. Although used to think it should be Yolanda Yellow Hat (we had an au pair called Yolanda hence my advanced name knowledge at that age).
