Not five any more, but when he was it was Tintin.

Got a 5 year old Tomboy - she loves all Roald dahl books. Currently reading the twits and have just finished Georges marv. medicine. Anything a bit rude or connected with the loo!

5 is a bit of a funny age, as they are not reading themselves fluently yet, but too big for baby books.

My DS has always liked Richard Scarry books - lots to look at on each page.

Much to my dismay (have literature degree) DS is not at all keen on narratives/stories and much prefers factual/observational books. Ds got a simple encyclopaedia for his 5th birthday which he adores and still looks at. He also liked books about the moon and space. There are some fantastic, sophisticated "flap" books (ie not baby ones)on, eg electricity and natural world - he adores anything re those.

DS prefers factual books too. Mainly about dinosaurs.

Ds2 (5) spends hours poring over books about volcanoes, earthquakes, the ocean etc. He's not that keen on fiction. Usborne does good flap books - we've got one called Science.

Horrid Henry
Whiff the big fat beautiful smelly baby
George's Marvelous Medicine
Jellyfish (fact book)
Book about volcanoes

I should imagine a simple factual book about how poo is made would be literary Nirvana for most five year old boys, sadly. It's all a little toileterial in here lately.
