Book about a train and a haunted wood

I wonder if anyone can help me identify this book from my own childhood. It was basically about a train which had a face and was red and yellow (definitely not Thomas) and the train had to go through a haunted spooky wood which may have been called Witch Wood, and there was a picture of the train going uphill towards the spooky wood with lots of bats flying about.
I have this very vivid memory of that picture in that book, and remember loving the story but have no idea of the title - does it ring any bells with anyone?

Was it a picture book, or a story with some pictures?

It was a story with lots of pictures (one of those with a short paragraph of text and a big picture on each page).

Hi did you ever find out the title? I’ve spent years looking for this book I had as a child - it had a blue cover and I think the images were blue and black?

Also it absolutely terrified me - I’d have been about 3 and I’m now 60
