My dd likes Lawrie better than Nicky! Where did I go wrong?

FrannyandZooey · 18/05/2008 08:50

LOL sorry, me too
Lawrie is much more interesting

seeker · 18/05/2008 08:57

But which one would you want your dd to model herself on?

Bet you like Marianne better than Eleanor too!

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 18/05/2008 09:00

oh Nicola is so dull, really
I would rather have a loopy Lawrie who can actually DO something fantastically well and has a bit of an emotional life instead of all this buttoned up stuff riding horses with Patrick

FrannyandZooey · 18/05/2008 09:01

sorry I am so the wrong person to answer this thread! I am sure some Nicola fans will be along later

seeker · 18/05/2008 09:04

I know - but I do like the idea of hidden depths in Nicola. All that flirting with Catholicism and unrequited love! Do you think she ended up as one of the peculiar Miss Marlows with Rowan?

OP posts:
seeker · 18/05/2008 09:06

Or did she actually end up married to Patrick because he didn't have the guts to stand up to daddy and mummy over Ginny?

Hello

I prefer Nicola . Lawrie drives me nuts. I sometimes wonder who I am most like....hopefully not Ann .

There's going to be a new book about Antonia Forest published by GGBP some time soonish I think. Here it is.

IdrisTheDragon · 18/05/2008 09:07

I think Patrick goes off Ginty anyway. I am of the feeling that he and Nicola get married.

IdrisTheDragon · 18/05/2008 09:08

I would love to carry on with my thoughts, but am sadly being called away by my two children. Will resume later.

FrannyandZooey · 18/05/2008 09:13

Oh Patrick definitely realises Ginty is a hopeless case, in Autumn Term
damn lucky escape for him wasn't it
looking forward to new book - I loved The Marlows and Their Maker

Nicola's depths are too hidden for me
I like someone you can have some emotional intimacy with, not someone whose idea of letting it all hang out is having a photograph of Nelson on their dressing table

seeker · 18/05/2008 09:13

Oh do come back when you can, Idris!

Patrick went off Ginty over the business with the O level paper didn't he? But only because his father was looming so large and reminding him of his responsibilities to his family and his class(!)

MrsJohnCusack · 18/05/2008 09:15

ok I just reread them and I found the bit with Patrick, when the french au pair whatsit more or less propositions him, REALLY odd?

does he REALLY mean you should only have sex if you love someone OR if it's paid for?
has been bamboozling me for a while

(PS I find NIcky AND LAwrie both quite annoying, but Nicky slightly less so. Ginty is a pain in the arse)

FrannyandZooey · 18/05/2008 09:16

yes do come back Idris I am not doing the trick here at all
I think Patrick is a smart chap and realised that a life with Ginty was going to be full of scenes and drama
now Patrick HAS got fabulous hidden depths and is just charmingly shy

seeker · 18/05/2008 09:16

Be fair, she had a picture of the dog and a pony too (I think) And Giles's ship!

Oh all right, she is a bit of a plank.

But can you imagine having emotional intimacy with Lawrie? She's have to notice you first!

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 18/05/2008 09:17

is that partly his rather odd and posh upbringing, MrsJC?

FrannyandZooey · 18/05/2008 09:19

well you could have emotional intimacy with Lawrie ABOUT LAWRIE, at least
point taken

yes I am sorry Nicola is a plank (great description)
many great series protagonists are a bit dull IMO - allows the other characters to be completely and bounce around them without letting the series self-destruct
qv Harry Potter
great series, character dull as ditchwater

FrannyandZooey · 18/05/2008 09:20

sorry when I said Autumn Term I meant The Attic Term of course

MrsJohnCusack · 18/05/2008 09:21

yes that's what I thought but it came right out of left field and sat really strangely I though.

Lawrie was going to turn into a barmy old drama teacher swather in kaftans, with a very deep and raddled smoker's voice.

IdrisTheDragon · 18/05/2008 09:21

Have placated children. Just .

Am annoyed as somewhere I have a GGBP copy of Ready Made Family and I can't find it anywhere.

Trying to decide who I actually like the best - not Lawrie, not Ann, not Ginty, not Karen. Not Giles (who never seems real enough to me, although he does a bit more in Run Away Home).

Bother, have to leave.

MrsJohnCusack · 18/05/2008 09:22

SWATHED obviously

DS is 'helping'. It's an hour past his bedtime

FrannyandZooey · 18/05/2008 09:23

no no Lawrie is fab
really fab
what a great character

erm I think Patrick is a bit screwed up about girls isn't he
he's almost got this madonna / whore thing going on - he is full of romantic notions about women and doesn't really understand them at all - but you can see that eventually he will either marry a Ginty type in a grand and terrible romance, or finally realise that what he actually needs is someone who can be a friend and a sensible partner like Nicola

FrannyandZooey · 18/05/2008 09:24

Rowan of course, Idris, you have to like Rowan the best

MrsJohnCusack · 18/05/2008 09:26

oh LAwrie is annoying but yes, FAR more interesting

youy are right about central characters often being quite dull

yes that's it with Patrick, and teh whole Catholic guilt thing. He is a bit of a ponce, frankly

MrsJohnCusack · 18/05/2008 09:27

Rowan is my favourite

Tallis · 18/05/2008 09:32

I'd much rather my dd grew up like Miranda - so grown-up about singing in a CofE service, clever, loyal, funny. And a voice with a chime in it, like a bell.

Or Tim, even.

Lol was just off with the fairies and Nicola...gawd spare us. I loved her when I was growing up, mind, and only now look back and think, oh just relax, love. Stop putting the Lower Fours through fielding practice and being all interesting with your hawks. Anything wrong with a rabbit?

I wanted all my teachers to be like Crommie.

And btw, what is this Marlows and their Maker book, pray?

This is my favourite ever MN thread.
