Chapter books for 8yo - with some pictures

DS(8) / year 4 has had a lot of help at school/home to catch up to get his reading age where it should be, however he finds chapter books of pure text too off-putting.

He loves being read to so we read a wide variety each night but to read himself he prefers books that have some pictures etc like Dog Man, Investi Gators, Tom Gates, Captain Underpants. In his class they can read independently for 15 mins per day and can bring a book from home. He will happily read the above but when he has chose a text-dense chapter book he brings it home and says he has had enough after 2-3 pages.

So, I’m looking for suggestions please for some more books that bridge the gap between Dog Man (which tbh is too basic for him) and full-on chapter books.

I recommend the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, or the Tree House series. Both are a step up from what your son is reading now but not yet full on novels with text only. Plus each series has a lot of books so will keep him going a while if he gets into them.

Also look in your local library for easy reader books. The text seems to be a bit bigger and a bit more spaced out with more illustrations. I found that DD preferred those for a while.

The other thing to consider is can he see well enough? I'd be tempted to book him on for an eye test, just to check.

The Boy Who Grew Dragons series is brilliant and has illustrations.

Some David Walliams as have pictures to, eg robodog
Harry Potter do an illustrated version too.

Should have added these are what DD reads, if she is faced with a page of words it overwhelms her, whereas picture break up the page. We have had her sight tested and all fine.

I loved Mr Stink possibly more than the DC Grin
